The Disney College Program Phone Interview

Hey, all you College Program (CP) hopefuls! So you’ve decided that you want to work at the most magical place on earth. Well, first things first, you have to get in! Click here to get things going, if you haven’t already. Now, while I don’t guarantee this list of tips will get you in, it will definitely set you up for success! Let’s get started shall we?

Pick the Right Role– The CP gives you the chance to choose the jobs you wish to apply for through their role-checklist. Roles range from Photopass photographer to life-guard. Narrow the list down to your top three and state why you ranked them as such. You need to show them that you have direction and that you are passionate and will enjoy the role that you are going perform. Remember your going to be working there for the duration of your program. Being un-happy with your role could ruin your entire experience. Know what you are getting yourself into. That being said, remember to keep an open mind. Disney hires its CP’s based on need and availability. Obviously, there are more attractions, merchandise, and food & beverage locations than anything else. Also be prepared, your interviewer may ask you if you are “willing” to work in certain role. Be honest and answer truthfully because if you say you are willing, then there is a good chance for you to be placed in that role, even if it is not something you selected on your role check list.

Prepping for the Interview– Here is a link to their tips page on how to prep for the interview. Definitely check out that link if you haven’t seen it already because it is very helpful. The only thing I will add is, when you schedule your interview make sure it is at a convenient hour for you so that you will have a clear head when your phone rings. I remember being so worried about applying early. When I scheduled my interview I wanted to be one of the first people to apply so I scheduled it at 8am in the morning. Not the best idea, I live on the west coast, which is 3 hours behind Florida. My phone rang around 5am. Luckily, I was awake because I couldn’t sleep at all that night!

During the Interview
Enthusiasm- The number one thing to remember is keeping your enthusiasm and energy level high. It’s more than just smiling when you speak. Show your interviewer your excitement about the roles you’re choosing. Have enthusiasm during each answer you give, while talking about past experiences.

Be positive- When answering each question, emphasize your strengths. Focus your answers on positive examples whenever possible. If asked about your weaknesses, don’t be afraid to list them. Just make sure to follow up with ways you are improving upon these areas.

Give specific examples- Come up with at least three examples of specific situations or stories that highlight your successes and accomplishments.

Ask questions- Prepare questions in advanced for the roles you are applying for or questions you have about the program itself. This will show your interest as well as keep the conversation going. A good one is asking about what you should do next. Don’t ask about money!

After the Interview- Definitely try to follow up with a thank you to your interviewer through e-mail. Then all you have to do is wait. For me this was the worst part. It took 6 long grueling weeks for my purple folder of acceptance to arrive at my house! Your best bet is going to be keeping yourself busy to pass the time. I recommend getting on the Facebook group for your CP season and get to know people. These are people that are going through the exact same thing you are so already you have something in common.

Final Tips- Do your research. The questions you will be asked are going to pertain to the roles you selected as well as yourself. How you work, live, and interact with others is something to think about. I hope this helps some of you and if you have any questions feel free to leave me a message. Good Luck!
