‘The Day’: Foreign Post-Apocalyptic Movies

Studio Ghibli

“The Day” is a Canadian post-apocalyptic film. Post-apocalyptic films take place after some event destroys most of the Earth and human life. In the U.S., a post-apocalyptic film might take place after technology destroys life, similar to “WALL-E.” The reason for Earth’s destruction varies in foreign post-apocalyptic films because of the country’s own ideas. Here are a few of the best foreign post-apocalyptic films.

‘Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind’

Studio Ghibli films often involve a plot about nature. “Nausicaa” is one such film, and Studio Ghibli’s first film. In the film, war destroyed the land creating a toxic jungle with giant mutated bugs. One young girl tries to learn about the jungle and find a way to bring together humans and nature. It is a beautifully animated film for young and old alike.

‘Akira’

“Akira” takes place after a boy with psychic abilities destroys Tokyo. The new city is called Neo-Tokyo and is a dystopian world. In the film, another boy develops similar uncontrollable powers as Akira before him. Other characters, with the help of Akira, must stop the boy from destroying the city and repeating the past. It is an animated film that has become a cult hit.

‘Delicatessen’

French film “Delicatessen” is weird and morbid, something not for the squeamish or anyone who does not enjoy black comedy. Set in a post-apocalyptic future where meat is scarce, the movie takes place in an apartment building above a butcher shop. This butcher shop always has the best cuts of meat available. How is that possible? Let’s just say that the building tenants end up missing.

‘The Last Battle’

French film “The Artist” recently created waves in the movie industry because it is a black & white silent film in the days of Hi-def color. It isn’t the first French film to make such a move. “The Last Battle” does the same, except the silence comes from an apocalyptic event that has made survivors mute. The movie follows one man as he tries to protect one of the few remaining women on Earth. This was Luc Besson’s (“The Fifth Element”) first feature film.

‘Cargo’

Cargo” is Switzerland’s first science fiction film. Earth is unable to support life, so humans live in space. The story follows one woman as she travels through space with her crew to reach a planet where, she believes, many humans live. Along the way, she learns the truth.
