The Best Episodes of “Modern Family”

Best Episodes, Bounce House

“Modern Family” features the story of one big family, broken down in three family units. It’s a satirical comedy about the daily lives of a father with two children, their families, and his new wife and step-son. The tag line, “One big (straight, gay, multi-cultural, traditional) happy family.” says it all. The show airs Wednesday nights on ABC at 9 PM. In its second season, there are many great episodes, but we’ll take a closer look at the best ones.

Season 1 Episode 9: “Fizbo”
Original Air Date: November 25, 2009

Luke’s birthday falls near Thanksgiving and always seems to get forgotten in the grand scheme of things. As a result, Clare and Phil decide to throw him a huge party complete with a bounce house, zip line, arts and crafts, and more. Cam even dresses up as a clown, “Fizbo” to attend the festivities. The chain of events ends up putting Luke in the hospital.

Haley sets a scorpion free because she’s mad Dylan is flirting with someone else. It scares Cam. He runs into Phil, and scared of clowns sends him running into Jay. The collision causes him to fire the cross bow he’s given to Luke for the occasion. It deflates the bounce house. Fizbo knocks beads off of the craft table, which cause Luke to fall and break his wrist. He’s so happy because the entire family is at the hospital, he still thinks it’s the best birthday ever.

Manny spends the episode trying to impress a girl. She gets trapped in the bounce house and he uses the zip line to come in and save her.

Season 2 Episode 2: “The Kiss”
Original Air Date: September 29, 2010

Claire reads Alex’s text messages to find some communication with a boy, and asks Haley to ask her about them. Haley asks her sister, but tells her that waiting too long before kissing a boy for the first time will cause people to believe she’s a lesbian. She rushes to kiss the boy, but finds herself embarrassed. Later he admits he’d like to kiss her but wants to wait.

Jay makes fun of Gloria’s cooking traditions, so to get back at him, she makes a few up for him on the spot, which he participates in thinking they are genuine.

As Phil goes above and beyond to fix Jay’s printer and gets no more than a simple, “Thanks.” When the entire family witnesses this, they give Jay trouble because he dozen’t show affection. After some hounding, he kisses Mitchell. Mitchell then kisses Cam. Jay even goes so far as to give Manny a goodnight kiss.

Season 2 Episode 6: “Halloween”
Original Air Date: October 27, 2010

Claire’s favorite holiday is Halloween, and she goes all out with decorations and a skit to scare her trick-or-treaters. No one else seems to care, because Haley dresses provocatively; Alex would rather study; Jay and Gloria were having a fight because he made fun of the way she speaks; Cam recalls a bad childhood memory; Phil is upset by the fact that his neighbors decided to divorce and he was afraid it would happen to him and Claire; and Mitchell went to the office dressed as Spiderman because he was pranked. Humor is throughout the entire episode, but it all comes together at the end when the family lets go of their issues and lets Claire have the Halloween she wants.
