The American Dream – Spoken Word Poetry

Spoken Word, The American Dream

Our hearts frosted over
With concern for self
We watch over what is “mine”
Don’t impede our rights
Or touch our belongings
Nor trouble us with your needs

We are happy and content
To collect more wealth
And keep it for ourselves
Don’t ask us to share
For there’s more we want
Our greed is unfulfilled

We must satisfy our desire
Of lust for possessions
Get a higher paying job
To buy a bigger house
And drive a newer car
Than all our neighbors and friends

Don’t tell us about starving babies
Or children that sleep on the streets
We don’t want to see the famine
Or hear about the world’s needs
For you see we’re way too busy
Living the “American Dream”
