Text Messaging Acronyms — the New Shorthand

Idk, Shorthand

Text messaging has become the communication of the future; and, to be honest, I almost missed the boat. I had decided that it just wasn’t for me; even going so far as to have my wireless carrier remove the text messaging feature from my phone. Then my place of employment implemented texting into our work communications. Since the majority of employees already owned cell phones and were proficient texters, they decided that simple messages that needed to reach multiple people would be sent via text.

And so my texting adventure began. It went fairly well, actually, except that I kept receiving messages from my colleagues that contained work revelant information interspersed with mixed up letters like btw and ttyl. You can imagine my confusion. Thanks to the internet and some deductive reasoning using contextual clues, I now consider myself proficient in these texting acronyms and even use them in my own messages. If you are a text message novice, I hope the following commonly used acronyms will help you both understand the texts you receive and be useful in the messages you send.

Instead of expressing your sentiments in the traditional way, maybe you will want to try one of the many acronyms used to tell that special someone how you feel. Here are some to choose from.

IWALU I will always love you
LU or LY, Love you
LYL, Love you lots

To express friendship:
