Ted Bundy: The Suave Lawyer

Ted Bundy

Ted Bundy is one of the most notorious serial killer in the criminal history of America . Though he has confessed to killing only 28 people, it is estimated that he killed around 100 female victims in the 1970’s. Surprisingly this serial killer was a suave educated lawyer.

Ted Bundy was born in November 1946 in Burlington, Vermont. His unwed mother, Louise, gave him her maiden name and Ted was believed to think that his grand parents were his parents and Louise was his ‘sister. Though Louise said that a war veteran was the father, there was rumor that her own father could have been the father of her son.

Around this time, he visited Vermont and came to know the truth about his parentage. This changed him drastically. He became moody and volatile in nature. He dated a young divorced secretary for 6 years, until for the first time he went to prison for kidnapping in 1976. Later that year he started working for the Republican party of Washington State. In 1973 while on a business trip to California, he met Stephanie again and rekindled his relationship with her.
He two timed both women without their knowledge. After a few weeks, he dumped Stephanie and said that he took it up with her just to prove to himself that he could have her.

It was after this that he went on a rampage, killing young women. His first murder was committed in 1974 when he was 27. His first victim was an 18 year old student who wished to become a famous dancer. Ted entered her apartment around midnight, sexually assaulted her and hit her with a metal rod on her head. The next morning her roommate found her in a coma and though she survived the attack, she was brain damaged.

Ted’s next victim was a Washington University student Lynda Ann Healy. He killed her and wrapped her in a bed sheet and carried her away with him. His next victim was a 19 year old student Donna Gail Manson, followed by Susan Rancourt. Eye witnesses testified that a man with his arm in a cast requested to carry a pack full of books to his car. This killing spree continued and the detectives were clueless as to who the killer could be.

He got spotted when he abducted Janice Ott and Denise Naslund in broad daylight. He requested them to carry his sail boat from his car but nearing the car no sailboat was found. Nobody could say ‘no’ to this handsome young man by name Ted. This is when he got identified. All these killings happened within a span of 5 months.

The second spate of murders started after a gap of three months again. This time it was at Utah as Ted Bundy had joined law school there. His modus operandi was to beat his victims and then strangulate them. Every recovered skull had injury. He hid a rod in his Volkswagen and always dumped the body far away from the area of crime. Ted always encountered his victims in public places and girls simply were bewitched by his handsome good looks. Sometimes he had a cast on his hand or would impersonate as a cop or fire department official. When sketches of his flew all over Florida his former girlfriend identified him to the police.

He was executed on an electric chair on 24th January 1989. His last words were” I would like to give my love to my family and friends.
