Third Year in College – 2001: I was a psychology major. I had always desired to work in a helping profession. Psychology was interesting and it laid a great foundation for learning about people, but it was not the approach that I wanted to take. I did research to learn about other helping professions. I came across the website for the International Coaching Federation (ICF) . This was the first time that I heard of life coaching. I put it on the back-burner of my mind and focused on completing my degree.
Fast Forward Ten Years, One Marriage, and Three Children Later – 2011: An unfortunate life crisis hit my family because of poor decision-making. I suddenly became a homeless, single mother, of three young children. I received help and financial support from extended family and kind people. Despite my pain, suffering, and regrets I wanted to make myself available, to help others to recuperate from their own life challenges. I resolved to recreate my life and help others to do the same. Life coaching came off the back-burner at a time when I needed it the most.
September 2012:
- I decided to start a life coaching business.
- I finalized my business’ name and I ensured that it was not trademarked.
- I purchased a website domain and web-hosting for my business.
October 2012:
- I joined a life-coach-training program.
- I became a client. To become a coach, I needed to experience the benefits of being coached. It changed my life, and confirmed my passion to work in the life coaching profession.
- I worked with a training partner, with a group, and with volunteer clients to practice my skills.
November 2012
- I created a logo and slogan for my business.
- I created a website and a Facebook page for my business, which are still works in progress.
December 2012
- I became active online to meet new people.
- As a sole proprietor, I registered my business name with the state.
Looking Ahead to 2013: By the start of 2013, it is my goal to have a small collection of high-quality content published on the internet to help people and to encourage them to take advantage of my services. I will continue my education to improve and perfect my skills, and to meet the needs of my current and future clients. This is the beginning of an amazing journey.
