“Speedway in Lights” Opens Nov. 16, 2007, in Bristol, Tennessee

Children's Charities, TVA

For the past ten years, Bristol Motor Speedway’s “Speedway in Lights Powered by TVA” has given the tri-city area the most spectacular holiday light show the region has ever seen and this year will be no exception.

Speedway in Lights Powered by TVA will open on November 16 in Bristol, Tennessee at the Bristol Motor Speedway. This year’s show will have more lights than previous years along with new displays and the return of some of the previous year’s favorites. Bristol Motor Speedway, normally used for NASCARracing and labeled the World’s Fastest Half-Mile racetrack, has been holding the Speedway in Lights since l996 and has grown in popularity every year since. The light show will be held inside the racetrack and visitors will be allowed to drive on the track through displays of lights. It is recommended that you drive through the displays with just your parking lights on so you can truly enjoy the lights. More than 1.5 million lights and more than 200 displays will make up this year’s light show. Proceeds from the event will benefit the non-profit charity organization, the Bristol Chapter of Speedway Children’s Charities, which helps to better the lives of thousands of local children. Over the last ten years, the foundation has raised more than $3 million for area charity agencies.

The newest display to this year’s show will be a 16,800 square foot LED net lighting that will cover the wheel fence and be synchronized to holiday music. Some of the previous years favorites that will be returning will be the animated snowman, which will have flying snowballs that build a huge snowman as the snowballs hit the ground; the Dinosaur Village which will have six dinosaurs and an erupting volcano; and the largest display, the Sea of Illumination, which is presented by Ripley’s Aquarium of the Smokies in Gatlinburg, Tennessee. This display is nearly 750 feet long and will be underneath the grandstand and will feature fish, sharks and other sea creatures. In the infield the Christmas Village returns where children can visit with Santa, roast marshmallows and drink hot chocolate.

The areas only ice skating rink, the York Ice Skating Rink, will return and be located in the front parking lot of the raceway. The ice rink will be open six days a week beginning on November 13 and will run through January 13, 2008. The ice rink will also be available for school parties on Thursdays and private parties on Saturdays and Sundays. Normal hours for the rink will be Tuesdays-Thursdays 4-9 pm, Fridays from 4-10 pm and Saturdays and Sundays from 2-10 pm. The cost to skate is $4.00, plus $2.00 for skate rental.

Speedway in Lights will be open nightly from 6-10 pm until January 5, 2008. Tickets are $10.00 per car Sunday-Thursday and $12.00 Fridays and Saturdays. If you are visiting the tri-city area in northeast Tennessee for the holidays, this light show is one attraction you won’t want to miss. My family has enjoyed this event year after year and will be back again this year. It is one of the most beautiful light displays you will ever see and knowing that proceeds from the light show enable local children to have a better life makes this event a must-see holiday activity for the whole family.
