Smashing Pumkins is not Nirvana, not The Cure and not Pearl Jam. But if you like either of these bands, definitely give 1979 a try if haven’t yet. It is the best single of the 90s.
Smashing Pumpkins was formed at the end of 80s but haven’t heard from them since the middle of 90s. They were playing at the bars in Chicago and with in a few years, signed contract with Virgin. Smashing Pumpkins is said to be an alternative rock band but they became main stream quickly and were very successful commercially in the 90s.
1979 was nominated for the Record of the Year. It is really one of the best songs of all time and it feels so much like the real Smashing Pumpkins. The band seems to be influenced by so much, they go from heavy alternative rock band all the way to romantic soft tunes. 1979 is a cool song, it feels sincere therefore one can listen to it over and over. And maybe one can even decide to write about it after listening it for ten years even!
1979 has many versions, you can find the song in Mellon Collie but if you can find it sold separately prefer that one as it has different versions which feel more personal. 1979 also has a remix version, some of the remixes are great but some of them not so great but definitely give it a try.
1979 is included in Mellon Collie and Infinite Sadness, it is in the second disk. This is a great album and one must have it at home and listen to it when sad, when angry, when unemployed and when happy, in love and employed.
The only bad thing about this song is that it will make you want to drive faster so maybe it is not a good idea to listen to it when driving.
The lyrics of this song is great-it is about growing up in the suburbs, being restless but not having anything much to do. There are a lot of movies about people in the suburbs now but when this song came there wasn’t much done or written about it yet. It was still a life that was being glorified. The lyrics of the song are not very easy to understand so it would be a good idea to pay attention to it. The lyrics were written (very successfully) by Billy Corgan.
The video of this song is one of the the best videos of all times. It was directed by Jonathon Dayton and Valerie Faris. The video is about teenagers in suburb and how they spend a day in boredom. The band members appear in the video too. In 1996, the video won the MTV Best Alternative Video Award.
