Sightseeing in Detroit – Places to Visit

Belle Isle

Whether you call it Motown city, Hockeytown, or Motor city, Detroit is a fun-filled city with arts, music, entertainment, and rich history. Taking a tour around Detroit’s monumental downtown area is often set forth with excitement.

Greektown – Take a tour down Monroe Ave to find a neighborhood filled with exquisite cuisine at several different restaurants including Fishbones, and PizzaPapalis. Enjoy the nightlife in Greektown after eating, by visiting attractions like Greektown Casino or interacting with local Detroiters at the nearest bar & grill.

Hart Plaza – Located in the heart of downtown Detroit, is an outdoor expanse with the monumental Dodge Memorial Fountain. Hart Plaza has ethnic and music festivals during the summer months. Open all year around, you can see a beautiful view of the Detroit River and Canada. Hart Plaza is minutes away from the GM Renaissance Center, a skyscraper in downtown Detroit; the Joe Louis Arena, home of the Red Wings, and the Riverfront, a 5 1/2 mile walk along the Detroit River.

GM Renaissance Center-This tall-architectural landmark is where General Motors Global Headquarters is located. The Renaissance Center is made out of glass and its distinct look is what attracts people to shop, dine, and stay here. Inside this 73-floor skyscraper includes the Detroit Marriott hotel, 42-Degrees North restaurant, and the Ren Cen 4 movie theatre. You can see a beautiful view of Detroit’s riverfront and Canada while overlooking the rest of downtown.

Henry Ford Museum- Located in Detroit’s neighboring city Dearborn, The Henry Ford Museum is filled with history of the Automaker and the design of the first car models. There is also an IMAX theatre to watch movies on the big screen.

Detroit Zoo– The Detroit Zoo is open all year around to see the animals, and with the wonderful butterfly exhibit, this is sure a show stopper at the Detroit Zoo. The Detroit Zoo is located in Royal Oak, about 15 minutes from Detroit.

Belle Isle- Belle Isle is a park on the Detroit River where people often hold family reunions and picnics, or weddings in the summer. During the day it is peaceful as you can park to look at the river, watch joggers run miles along the paved roads, and bike rider’s pedal around the park. The big, beautiful, water fountain located near the entrance is a great place to take pictures. In the summer the fastest boats compete on the Detroit River in the annual Gold Cup hydroplane boat race. On summer nights, local Detroiters drive around and watch what may appear to be a car show.

Detroit Institute of Arts– Referred to as the “cultural gem” of Detroit, the DIA has been around since 1885. With more than 100 galleries, the museum has a variety of cultural collections to view. The DIA is among the top six in the United States according to the DIA website. The Detroit Institute of Arts is located on Woodward Ave, in downtown Detroit.
