Shared Town Names in the U.S.A.

Traveling extensively from coast to coast in the United States of America, I discovered many places that share the same names. I often wonder if anyone conferred with the other state before acquiring that name without permission. I still ponder that.

In this day of copy writes and permissions, one might have to consult with snopes to know the truth of this matter. This list is not in any way complete, but quite a few are here for your enjoyment.

Toledo is in Oregon as well as Ohio. There maybe other Toledos, however these caught my attention, right away.

Newport Oregon shares it’s name with Rhode Island.

Ocean Beach is in New York, California, New Jersey and Connecticut.

Albany Oregon and Albany New York as well as Georgia share their names.

Manhattan is shared between New York and Montana.

Corvallis, Oregon and Montana share that town’s name.

Missouri, California, Idaho, Oregon, Florida, Indiana and Michigan all share Eugene.

Maine, Connecticut, Indiana, Tennessee, Texas, Arkansas, Florida, Colorado, Kansas and Oregon have the common name of Portland.

Virginia, Colorado, Maine and Oregon have a place called Troutdale.

Oregon, Texas, Arkansas, Louisiana, Montana, California, South Dakota and Missouri all have a Bend.

Washington and Montana both have a Ronan. Montana pronounces it ” Row nan” with the accent on the first syllable. I am not sure what Washingtonians call it.

Michigan, Nevada and Mississippi share Carson City.

Maine, Pennsylvania, California, Alabama, Michigan, Wisconsin, Iowa, Kentucky, New York and Virginia all have a Bangor.

Illinois, West Virginia, Louisiana, Arkansas, Indiana and Minnesota share the name Wheeling.

California, New York, Mississippi, North Carolina, Indiana, Maine, New Jersey, Washington, Maryland and Minnesota all have a Long Beach.

Oregon, Iowa, Illinois, Indiana, New York, Michigan, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Tennessee and Vermont all have an Eagle Point.

Valley is shared by: Alabama, Nebraska, Washington, Wyoming, Kentucky, Mississippi, North Carolina, New Jersey and Ohio.

North Dakota, Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas, Georgia, Illinois, New York, Indiana and Michigan share Fargo.

Oregon, New Hampshire, Maine, Illinois, Indiana, New Jersey, Ohio, Alabama, Virginia and Arkansas all have a Salem.

Montana, California, Alabama, Georgia, Kentucky, New York, Ohio, Oklahoma, Arizona, and Texas share the name of Helena.

Illinois and Wisconsin share Chicago.

California, Montana, Ohio,Texas and Arkansas all have a Fresno.

Texas, Oregon, Florida, Georgia, Maine, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, Wisconsin, South Dakota and Alabama share Dallas.

New York, Illinois and Maine share the name New City.

Idaho, Texas, Washington share Boise.

Arkansas, California, Florida, Mississippi, Wisconsin, West Virginia share a Pine Bluff name.

Colorado, Iowa, Indiana, Pennsylvania, Missouri, Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia and Idaho all have Denver in common.

Alabama and Arizona share the name Mobile.

Ohio, Georgia, Indiana, Mississippi, Illinois, Kansas, Kentucky, Montana and North Carolina share Columbus.

Florida, Kansas and Colorado all have a Tampa.

Kansas, Illinois, Indiana and Mississippi share Topeka.

California and Texas both have a Los Angeles.

Nevada, Illinois, Kansas, Minnesota, Texas, Georgia, Idaho and Indiana have a Reno.

The list goes on ,hoping I at least mentioned some places that were familiar to you.

To my knowledge Kalispell, Tacoma, Kodiak, Vera Beach and Middle Island have a monopoly on their names.
