This rustic barn kitchen cabinet resurfacing project is so simple and the perfect way to make old cabinets look old in a good way! You can cover the surface of existing wood or laminate kitchen cabinets that are in good shape and make them look like real weathered wood.
To Resurface Your Kitchen Cabinets To Look Like Weathered Barn Wood You Will Need:
Wood strips
Grey wood stain
Paintbrush
Saw
Finishing nails
Square head ails (optional)
Now, the first thing you need to do is check out your local home improvement store. You want ot see what kind of wood they will have available to you. Look for thin strips of wood.
You want to use a nice wood, like birch if you can, but pine will also work well. These strips shod be about 2 inches to 6 inches wide. They shod also be as thin as possible.
Once you have your wood bought you are ready to start attaching them to the kitchen cabinets.
The idea is to measure how tall and wide your cabinet door is. Cut the strips of thin wood to the same height as your cabinet doors. Lay the wood strips out side by side to create the same shape as yoru kitchen cabinet doors. Make sure they are the same width.
It really is a good idea ot measure how wide your kitchen cabinet doors are before you buy your strips of wood, this way you can know what size will allow you to use all one size width.
Now, to attach the wood strips to the door you need to use a wood glue on the back of the wood strips. Glue them to the front of the kitchen cabinets, then use a one inch finishing nail to hammer them in place.
You can use a nail gun to make this go so much faster. Another fun tip is to use old fashioned looking square head nails. These will give a great old fashioned appearance.
One other trip. There is no hard and fast rule that when you are resurfacing your kitchen cabinets to look like old barn wood that you have to use all vertical strips of this wood. You can play around with framing out the kitchen cabinets with the wood, then filling in the center with the vertical strips of wood.
I would also recommend using the iron on wood shutting in a matching wood ot cover the sized of the kitchen cabinets.
Now, on to making this new wood look like old wood on your kitchen cabinets. Use a gray blue wood stain or even a whit pickling stain. These will come in a thin paint on version or even a gel stain version that can be rubbed on. Either will work fine.
After al your wood is watched to the surface of your kitchen cabinets and the glue has dried, then stain. Young also use sand paper on the barn wood resurface kitchen cabinets ot age them ore when the stain dries.
Add another layer of stain to darken and cover the sanded areas!
One final tip: If you love color, the try choosing a red colored wood stain. May barns are traditionally painted red, so this would fit as well in this resurfacing project.
