Review: Sugarpill Cosmetics

Cosmetics, Eye Shadows, Eyeshadow Primer, Loose Powder, Make Up for Ever

Fans of Shrinkle, otherwise known as Amy, have been waiting a long time for a makeup line as bright and exciting as she is to come out, and finally Sugarpill Cosmetics has arrived. Amy promised us stunning colors with impressive staying power, and holy cow did she deliver!

Sugarpill Cosmetics, available at www.sugarpillshop.com, offers pressed powder eye shadows, loose powder eye shadows, and false lashes. Amy has designed her own unique packaging for these products, and has custom created the colors and lashes produced for her. The formulas and designs have been dictated by her, so these aren’t just re-packaged, pre-formulated products unlike many other small makeup companies online.

I was lucky enough to receive a sample of one of Sugarpill Cosmetics’ loose powder eye shadows, as well as one of the pressed powder eyeshadow four-color palettes. After testing them out, I was truly impressed. From someone who has plenty of MAC, Urban Decay, and Too Faced, these Sugarpill Cosmetics products are the superior value for lovers of show-stopping color.

The loose powder eye shadow I tried out in Goldilux was incredible. Often super-shimmery eye shadow products are a let-down. They don’t shimmer nearly as much on your eyes as in the packaging, and they tend to slide around your face (assuming you can manage to get them to go on your eyelid and not just all over your face in the first place). I applied the powder over an eyeshadow primer, and was amazed at the color payoff and shimmer. Well past two in the morning, Goldilux was still going strong and I was still getting comments on my golden lids. Sugarpill Cosmetics loose powder eye shadows are $12 for a 5 gram jar. To compare, MAC loose powder pigments are $19.50 each for 4.5 gram jars.

The pressed powder eye shadows (shown in the picture are swatches of Dollipop, Midori, and Afterparty, respectively, from the Sweetheart four-color eyeshadow palette) are fantastic. They blend well, have great staying power (I had to really wash those swatches with oil-based face wash to remove them, with no primer used), and the color payoff is fantastic. It can be SO hard to find bright colors that are just as bright on you as in the pan, but with Sugarpill Cosmetics what you see is what you get. To compare, the only MAC eyeshadows I’ve used that compare in terms of payoff are Electric Eel and Carbon. There’s a whole lot of pigment in these shadows! These pans are the exact size and amount of product found in Make-up For Ever eyeshadow pans, and I would say the quality and color payoff are comparable as well. Consider that a single Make-up For Ever eye shadow will cost you $19 at Sephora, the four-color palettes from Sugarpill Cosmetics are $34, just $8.50 per pan of color. Another huge plus of these four-color palettes? The pans are held in place with magnets, so you can easily switch out colors for other Sugarpill eye shadows to customize your palette. Individual eye shadows from Sugarpill cosmetics are $12 each.

Sugarpill Cosmetics offers a decent selection of bright, bold shades, plenty of pinks, greens, oranges, yellows, and blues. There’s even some you may have never really seen before. And what’s really exciting, is that Amy has a couple of true reds available, both shimmer and matte, which can be impossible to find. While the selection is currently modest, no doubt Amy will be releasing new colors as the line grows and prospers.

Overall? Two thumbs up for Sugarpill, three if I had a spare. One caveat, however; if you’re looking for anything even remotely “neutral” or subtle, don’t even bother!
