I had an opportunity recently to take my dinner at Grotto Pizza restaurant at Dewey beach in Delaware during our visit to Dewey beach. I had never visited Grotto
pizza in the past and was eagerly looking forward to this dinner. The Grotto Pizza restaurants are situated in only the Delaware state at present. I was surprised to find out that there are four such restaurants located on this beach complex. This really suggested how popular this restaurant is in its home state.
We reached to the restaurant at around 6 pm and were escorted to our table immediately. The restaurant was very spacious and having a very comfortable layout. We were total 5 family members together. The waiter immediately handed over the menus and took our order for drinks. The draft beer was available and we all settled on a big pitcher of the same. We ordered French fries and the onion rings as the starter. The starters were served within 6 minutes of the order and the drinks within 5 minutes of the order. We were impressed with the quality of draft beer and the starter items.
The French fries were just right in the taste and were crisp and were served with tomato catch up. The onion rings reminded us the original taste of India and as a result, we ordered one more serving of the same. We had a sweetened raspberry ice tea as a drink. This tasted great. The drinks were served in unlimited refilling. We looked through the menu and were thrilled to see that it covered wide selection of soups, fast food items, eight varieties of subs, and around 14 types of pizzas with lots of toppings. The pizzas were also available on per slice basis so that we all could taste various varieties of pizzas. The cost of 16 inches extra large pizza was around $15 and the cost of 12 inch regular pizza is around $10. The slice of each pizza costs $2.50. We ordered the Grotto traditional pizza in 16 inch size, with tomatoes and green pepper as the toppings. There was a special Sicilian pizza available on that particular evening. So, we also ordered couple of slices of the same. Both the pizzas were excellent in taste and I admit that this was the best pizza I had ever tasted in the USA during my last two years of stay in this country.
We came to know that Grotto pizza restaurant is as old as 60 years. It was meant to serve small hand pizzas in the beginning. The restaurant kept on developing subsequently and today, there are around 85 items on the regular menu. Recently, Grotto have started Gelato. Gelato is an Italian version of frozen ice- cream having minimum air entrapped so that its structure becomes intense and thick. We ended our dinner with cup of Gelato ice-cream in strawberry flavor. It was really fabulous and was fully balanced in sweetness, smoothness, and freshness of the ingredients. However, it is suggested to order only a single scoop of Gelato ice-cream as it is rather heavy. The entire experience of taking dinner at Grotto pizza was memorable and pleasant.
The atmosphere inside the restaurant was very friendly and cozy. We had a 6 months old infant child with us and even, he had no problem to stay calm and quiet throughout the dinner. The location of the restaurant at Dewey beach is also on the main street and very close to the dewey beach. Grotto also take beach delivery orders, which are delivered within 45 minutes. You can celebrate birthday parties and other such events at Grotto. However, make sure to walk down to this restaurant or reach by jolly trolley (a public transport available at dewy beach). This is due to the fact that metered parking near the restaurant is very expensive to the tune of $1.5 per hour. Also, make sure to book your table in advance if it is a weekend as otherwise you may have a long wait.
Our experience of dinner at Grotto pizza was really pleasant and enjoyable. I have no hesitation in recommending Grotto pizza as one of the best places for the food at dewy beach in Delaware.
