Review of Costco Birthday Cake

Butter Cream, Carrot Cake, Costco

There are several factors that drew our household into becoming members of Costco. One is the close proximity of the warehouse to our home as the local Costco is only a half mile away. Another factor was our growing family. There is definitely a breakeven point when it comes to deciding on warehouse club membership and a family that grows in number and weight. With a family of five, the benefit of bulk shopping definitely exceeds the cost when it comes to justifying purchasing a membership. Third highlight to Costco is the tasty and inexpensive food court that we stop at when concluding our bi-monthly Costco shopping trips. Finally one of the main hidden gems featured at Costco are the birthday cakes sold in the bakery. When time allows we usually prepare birthday cakes from scratch at home as these are the most cost effective and allow for some creativity. But then there are those times that balloons, party favors, and entertainment leave little time to spare on the cake; that is when Costco bakery comes to the rescue.

Review of Costco Cake: Quantity

There is quite the assortment of cake flavors one can purchase at the Costco bakery though they all are sold in half sheet cake size. The bakery also sells a tray of giant cupcakes will icing and sprinkles for festive gatherings such as children’s birthday parties. These cupcakes are huge and each will serve two children. The half sheet size cake is approximately 12 x 16 and produces approximately 48 servings (based on 2 x 2 cuts).

Review of Costco Cake: Price

Besides convenience of letting someone else do the baking of cake, the price is another huge reason to shop at Costco. A half sheet cake will usually run between $16 to $20 per cake depending upon the Costco location as well as flavor choice. The carrot cake will usually run a dollar more for a cake. This price is well below the cost of a half sheet cake charged by most local grocery stores which typically can run between $25 – $35.

Review of Costco Cake: Taste

The flavor choices of Costco cakes include chocolate, yellow, and carrot cakes. The chocolate and vanilla cakes include filling options of chocolate mousse, strawberry mousse, and vanilla cream cheese. The carrot cake automatically includes a filling of apricot mousse. The icing is a butter cream with choice of flavors of chocolate and white. The other icing option is a cream cheese frosting which is used on the carrot cake. The taste of the cake is superb as the cake is moist and the mousse fillings are refreshing between each layer. The butter cream icing is typically heavy as all butter cream frostings tend to be. Unfortunately the bakery does not sell cakes using a whipped cream icing. Overall the taste of the Costco cake is exceptional given the price paid and blows out the competition of local grocery stores such as Meijer and Jewel. Our local bakery does produce a better cake, though for a much steeper price of about $50 for a half sheet size.
