Recently we made a quick stop at Abbay’s drive-thru to get supper for the hungry family that consists of a father, mother, three children (including a one-week old who doesn’t eat table food yet) and me, the grandma. It had been a trying afternoon of shopping and the idea of the normal drive-thru fare fell short of my hungry tummy’s expectations. Home cooking that I didn’t have to home cook was exactly what I was looking for. What a great idea – what genius thought of this?
Though the easy-to-read menu board touted an assortment of meats and vegetables that made choosing difficult, we ordered the Family Meal for $26.99 and split the meat – three servings of country fried steak and three servings of beef tips and rice. Some other meat choices were chicken and dumplings, meat loaf, pork chops, and fried fish. Four side dishes were included with the meal and we chose macaroni and cheese for the children, mashed potatoes, turnip greens and fried okra.
The country fried steak was crispy and tender and was served with brown gravy on the side. They were well seasoned – not over-seasoned. The beef tips and rice were tender and very tasty. All four generous side dishes were well prepared; rich “dirty” mashed potatoes, crispy fried okra, creamy macaroni and cheese, and tender turnip greens. As an afterthought, we ordered a large banana pudding which rivaled my mother’s homemade pudding.
The drive-thru experience was flawless, A courteous young lady took our order over a crystal clear intercom. Within five minutes, the same young lady handed our supper through the window. The food was well packaged and easily traveled the ten miles home. Fifteen minutes later, we were dipping out our delicious ‘home-cooked’ meal complimented by buttery hot rolls.
If there is a downside to Abbay’s, I did not find it. My only glimpse of the sit down area was through the service window, but it appeared to have a casual fast food ambiance. The speed, the freshness of the food, and the courteous service will draw me back to try the pork chops and peach cobbler.
For a grand total of $32.99 plus tax, we had a hearty meal with our choice of meats and veggies with a few leftovers for lunches. The grocery bill to prepare this meal would have cost almost as much, but would have taken a couple of hours cooking and cleaning.
Abbay’s could very well become my favorite restaurant – a quick place to pull through for that southern fare that I crave from time to time. For about the same price and time investment of a burger and fries fast food meal, a home-cooked dinner awaits.
