Remodeling Your Master Bedroom

Home Improvement Shows

We recently did some remodeling in our home and learned that there is a lot to consider when planning a do it yourself job. You need to plan ahead for any home remodeling especially when you are going to do it yourself. You will need to have an idea of how you want to remodel your master bedroom and how it is going to benefit your needs and style.

Here are some tips to follow when planning a project:

You will need to plan on how you are going to finance your remodeling job of your master bedroom. Do you know what your local building codes are and do you need a permit? This is something you need to check on before doing any construction or remodeling. Do you know all the steps in completing this project? You need to be prepared. Watch T.V. shows like “Sell this House”, “Holmes on Homes”, or “Flip this House” to get some ideas on home improvement.

Check online for resources or go to your local library and search for home improvement books for tips. You will need to have all of the right tools to complete your projects or know someone who will loan these tools to you. You can also rent tools that you don’t own if you don’t want to purchase them. Make a list of everything needed before starting. You will need to estimate how much time you will need to complete your project. Ask some known contractors for advice. If you have never done one on your own prepare for it to take you longer than it would take them.

Decide on how you want to remodel. Are you painting or wallpapering, or drywall? Will you be changing the flooring? Will you use carpet or wood flooring? Decide on if you want to change your molding and how much you will need. Make a list of materials you will need and do some measuring. Look around at different suppliers like The Home Depot Store, 84 Lumber, and Lowe’s; do some comparing with their prices to get the best deals. Be sure to take your lists with you and write down prices. Choose your colors that you want to work with in your master bedroom.

You will want to be prepared for unplanned events in case you may need to do some upgrading. Some things that you may want to consider are: Windows (This good time to consider replacing them) Replace electrical wiring. (Consider the cost of bringing in a professional to do this if you are not licensed to do it yourself).

Are you going to want a television in your master bedroom? You may want to consider adding outlets and wiring for one to be mounted on the wall. You may want to add cable wiring or a telephone jack to your bedroom during this project. Light fixtures and fans, and lamps should be in places to compliment your room.

Closet space is a must have in a master bedroom. You should look into maximizing your space and purchase closet organizers to get the most out of your closets. You will need to consider both sexes and their needs. Get ideas by browsing through magazines or watching some of the home improvement programs on television. Go to some of the home improvement shows that are offered in your area.

Choose a theme or style. Use neutral colors in your master bedroom. Match your accessories to your colors of your room when finished. You will want to use warm colors. Bedrooms should be comfortable and an expression of ones self. Some neutral colors include off white, tan, light beige, or light sage green. If you want more splashes of color then do this in your bed covers or personal items.

My husband and I chose a light beige carpet and then added some red and greens, and darker tones of brown into our bed accessories to bring out the colors. Even if you are doing this bedroom just for you there may come a time you may want to put it on the market and potential buyers will want to be able to fit their style or theme right into that room. They will not want to have to change everything before they move into their new home.

Before beginning your project you should consider where you will be storing furniture and if you will have help from some family and friends. Store clothing where you have easy access to them. You will want to consider children and pets being underfoot and make arrangements for them to be somewhere else that is safer.
