Red Wing Dog Park in Virginia Beach, Virginia

Oceana

There is nothing I like more than my dog begging to go to bed at night. On these nights I know she is just plain exhausted from a ton of exercise during the day. Walks and jogs are great for getting out all her energy but the thing she loves best is going to the dog park. In Virginia Beach, Virginia we have a great dog park at Red Wing Park.

Red Wing Park is off of General Booth Boulevard. If you’re traveling down General Booth, heading towards the oceanfront, it will be on your right hand side just before Oceana Boulevard. You’ll need to enter the park and follow the circle around to the back right corner. In this corner you will see a fenced in dog park.

This dog park is a large fenced in area just before a large group of trees. In the park they have obstacle courses for the dogs to run around on. There are ramps to run up and poles to jump over like dogs would do in a competition. They also keep the area stocked with toys for the dogs to play with. There are also plenty of plastic bags around the fence to pick up your dog’s messes.

As the summer months taper off and the weather starts to turn cooler the dog park is packed with playmates. The best times to stop by are in the evenings about 5 or 5:30 and weekends about 11 or noon are also great times. There will be plenty of dogs for your dog to play with. They open and close with the park at dawn and dusk so be sure to stop by then. It will be gated off when closed and you will not be able to enter.

Before you can bring your dog into the park they will need to be registered with the office. The office is located right next to the park and is open during the same hours as the dog park. You will need to bring in proof of vaccinations, including rabies, and your city registration. There is a small fee, $5 for the year, you will have to pay. The office staff will give you a tag to put on your dog’s collar and it will need to be on them every time you visit the park.

There are a list of rules and guidelines you must follow when using the park. The office staff will provide you with these when you register. Most are self explanatory and easy to follow. Just be sure to follow them if you and your dog want to continue to use the park.

There is another dog park near Mount Trashmore to take your dog to. I have not visited this one but it is run by the same parks and recreation committee as the Red Wing Park so I’m sure it’s just as nice. If you already have your dog registered with Red Wing you will not need to do it again at Mount Trashmore, just be sure your dog comes with their tags.
