Quick Kitchen Cabinet Makeover Ideas

Color Wash, Color Washing

Remodeling a kitchen can become more than what a person expected it to be. Possibly your sitting in your home wishing there was something you could do with your old cabinets to bring new life to your kitchen. Replacing kitchen cabinets can be rather expensive. One can bring an updated and new look to their kitchen cabinets without having to replace them. These changes can be quick and easy. I love do-it-yourself projects.

Paint

Paint can make your kitchen cabinets sparkle. You can use a spray on enamel. They come in many wonderful colors. Remember to tape off what you do not want painted. I like to paint the trim of cabinets white and then the rest a different color. I have noticed that this really makes them stand out. Maybe you like a different color scheme. Have fun with it.

Color Wash

If you have a dark kitchen, try color washing your cabinets. Color washes come in many handy shades. Remember to sand off the old finish first. Once sanded rub the cabinet with your color wash. If you are using a color wash that does have not a seal in it you will have to purchase one.

Sponging

I love sponging! This is an easy way to add pizzazz to your cabinets. Clean the old surface and sand it lightly. Mix any acrylic paint of your choice and, using a natural sponge, lightly dab the sponge all over the surface. Remember to leave parts of the color underneath showing. If you do not like it, you can always add a second coat. I have done cabinets like this, and loved them!

Trim

Adding trim to your cabinets can give them a totally new look. Simply add trim of your choice to the front of the cabinet doors. You can pick from wooden trim to white trim. Shop around to find the one that you will like the best. Once the trim is added you can either paint it or stain it.

Hardware

Sometimes changing our hardware is all it will take. Maybe your knobs have been on the cabinets for as long as you remember! Knobs come a variety of shapes and sizes. You can find oversized knobs, white knobs, metal tone knobs, U-shaped knobs, etc. Drawer pull knobs can add a ton of character to your kitchen. When replacing the knobs you can add a little bit of “something” to the cabinet where the knob goes. Painting a square, or a pattern can really make your new hardware sparkle.

Lining

One thing I have noticed over the years is many people work on the outside but forget the inside. Please do not forget the inside of your cabinets and drawers. It is fun to find the interior that will hold your belongings. You can paint inside of these or lay Con-Tact paper. Con-tact paper comes in a variety of colors and patterns. It is also very easy to clean.

Have fun redoing your kitchen cabinets. Think about the color scheme you want to go for. What theme do you want? Make sure to have all your questions answered before you start to paint anything. Finding neat and creative ways to make our homes sparkle with a new touch is an amazing feeling.
