Quick and Easy School Hairstyles for Little Girls

Barrettes, Hair Tools

All parents want their little girls with long hair to look neat and presentable when going to school. Weekends are a time for relaxing and letting hair down in it’s natural state while playing and winding down from the long week. Keeping little girls’ long hair off the face and styled also prevents their hair from falling in their eyes and creating a nuisance or distraction while learning their lessons in school. Gym class and playing on the playground can also cause little girls’ long hair to become excessively knotty, therefore making the hair more difficult to maintain. Hair falling in the eyes can also create a safety hazard due to vision obstruction. Here are some ideas on styling your little girl’s long hair for school to keep her safe and ensure her day is as productive as possible.

Ponytail. Ponytails never go out of style. Whether sitting high on top of her head or starting at the base of her neck, ponytails keep the hair contained and off the face. Ponytails also help to keep her cool in the very beginning and the end of the school year when temperatures are soaring. After brushing the hair smooth, gather your little girl’s hair in one hand while winding a coated ponytail holder around her hair until it is tight. Don’t ever use rubber bands as they become easily snagged in the hair. More times than not, you will find yourself using scissors to remove the rubber band.

Two Ponytails. All little girls look adorable in this classic hairstyle. Just like with the single ponytail, the two ponytails can be placed high or low on your daughter’s head. After using a brush to smooth the hair, use a comb to make a straight and even part down the center of your child’s head. Make sure there is an even amount of hair on either side of the part. Use two matching ponytail holders to make a ponytail on each side.Embellish the ponytails with fancy ponytail holders to match her outfit and entice your little girl to sit still for the hair styling session. There are many styles of ponytail holders available from pom poms, to flowers and everything in between.

Bun. Another classic hairstyle that looks wonderful on long hair, the bun keeps the hair neat and presentable while out of your daughter’s eyes and off her neck. Gather the hair high on top of her head and tuck the ends down to create a neat mound of hair. Wind the ponytail holder around the base of the hair while allowing some of the ends to stick out. This keeps the hairstyle fun and current without making your little girl look like an old fashioned librarian! Use both hands to pull out the sides of the bun a little bit to keep it looking loose and natural. A little hair spray applied carefully will keep the hair in place all through the school day.

Half Ponytail. This is the style my girls prefer for school and looks great with long hair whether it is straight or curly, thick or thin. Gather the top half of your little girl’s hair and make a ponytail with the front half of her hair. Brush smooth the loose hair. This keeps the hair off of her face while also allowing her to keep some of her hair down and loose.

Alligator Clip. Alligator clips are wonderful hair tools. These should only be used if your little girl has very thick hair. Thin hair does not hold well in alligator clips and causes discomfort since the clip is clamped too close to the head. If your little girl has very long and thick hair, use a medium sized alligator clip to catch and hold the hair in the middle of the head in a very fashionable style.

Two Barrettes. If your long haired little girl is insistent upon wearing her hair down across her shoulders, use two barrettes to keep the front hair from falling in her face. After brushing the hair smooth, make a side or middle part and attach a barrette on either side. There are many lovely themed barrettes available from Care Bears, Dora The Explorer and Barbie. Investing in a few decorative pairs of barrettes make your little girl a bit more receptive to having her hair styled for school.

Most little girls go through a phase where they want their hair long, but don’t want to have it styled. Besides keeping it looking neat and attractive, styling your long haired little girl’s hair in one of these styles ensures that she will be able to go through her school day without the annoyance and potential safety hazard of having her hair in her eyes all day.
