Pros and Cons of Solar Power

Solar Cells

America runs on oil. We consume close to 20 million barrels of oil a day. We ran out of enough oil to meet our own demands and had to begin importing in the 1970’s. While we’re guzzling down on oil reserves other countries are going green with solar power. Oil pollutes our environment is not renewable. The cost is going up and we need to get with the program and go green. We need more cars that use less fuel, and a renewable clean, energy source to sustain us. Germany has led the revolution of solar power right next to Spain. Germany has installed closed to 4000 MW of PV solar energy capacity with Spain leading right behind them. America uses less the 8 times the solar power than Germany. Fuel emission is the main source of pollution in our environment. It destroys and heats up the atmosphere, leading to rising temperatures, and the death of many animal species. Increasing environmental concern and demands for energy demands cleaner energy. In my home country of Pakistan, I have seen the first hand effects of energy being wasted. Pakistan energy sector is suffering from a 60% shortage. The energy sector cant provide enough energy so some cities and towns suffer up to 12 hour a day rolling blackouts. When I travel back home I often feel thankful for the sufficient energy we have in the United States, and i ponder on methods that could be used to fill the shortage of energy in Pakistan. Although I can’t fix the energy shortage, I still believe in the benefits of solar power and I encourage people to use it.

Solar Power Pros

Solar power is clean and renewable and it saves money. Solar energy is produced from sunlight so it never runs out and doesn’t emit harsh chemicals into the atmosphere. It is nearly maintenance free and only has to be replaced every 50 years. Although it can be costly to produce solar panels and solar cells, solar energy pays for itself within a few years by the amount of energy it saves. Solar power is definitely conservative and will save tons of money on gasoline. They can be installed on rooftops which can solve the problem of the space they take up. Solar panels will allow the world to become independent of depending on fuel that cannot be renewed.

Solar Power cons

Solar cells and panels can be costly, and they don’t produce energy at night because they need sunlight. To have electricity at night you will need to have a battery to store solar energy or an alternative source of power. Solar panels also take up a great deal of space and they may not work well in polluted areas, which can be a downside for businesses. The weather can also effect the function of solar power panels.

Why we need to go green

Gas is running out and we basically depend on it for everything. Tax money is going to waste for energy that can’t be renewed. We need to go green and find better ways to create renewable energy. Solar energy can be a great resource and it is well worth the cons. Many countries are leading the way to becoming greener, we should follow behind them.
