Product Review: Snuggie for Dogs

Boston Terriers, Cocker Spaniels, Dog Clothing, Labrador Retrievers, Snuggies

If you’ve seen Snuggie blankets for humans, you can visualize Snuggies for dogs: Blankets that fit around the dog’s body with oversized sleeves in front.

The coats are made of soft fleece and have adjustable, Velcro straps. They come in four sizes and will fit about any size dog: from Extra-Small teacup breeds, to Small Chihuahuas, mini Pins, Bichons and toy Poodles, to Medium-sized Cocker Spaniels, Beagles, Boston Terriers, miniature Schnauzers and standard Dachshunds to Large Collies, Dalmatians, Dobermans and Labrador Retrievers.

The washable coats come in pink or blue. At Amazon.com, costs range upwards from $2.75 for “used” to $11.95 for “new” to $16 for two blue sets in “Large” at dogsnuggies.org.

Because the leg holes are quite loose, dogs don’t have the pressure of cloth on their legs to hinder their movements. They can be worn inside or out of the house and may be washed as often as needed.

Dogs look adorable in them, which appears to be one of the main draws. The owners think the dogs look fabulous and get a big kick out of taking pictures of their dressed pets.

Although much easier to put on than traditional dog clothing, some owners who leave comments on the Snuggie sites remark that they might like the coats more than the dogs do.

A couple owners said their dogs seemed to like the extra warmth in the house; two said they were not warm enough for outdoor use; and one remarked that so many people laughed when they saw her little dog and made such a fuss over him that she’d definitely buy more if they made them in other colors.

Of course, some killjoys make ugly comments ranging from remarks about the crazy owners who purchase such frivolous items to others who think that furry dogs should not need clothing.

If you look at the photos of the dogs in their coats, some seem to enjoy them inside the house while sitting on owners’ laps, and some look simply doe-eyed at the camera for yet another picture-taking session.

The website touts that Snuggies are all about doggie accessories that offer a “cozy fit, warmth and mobility.”

Some owners remarked that the coats seem to slide towards the dogs’ backsides, forcing the owners to pull the coats forward constantly. Others complained that the dogs’ bellies were too exposed for cold, wintry weather.

The ads state that some dogs love their Snuggies enough to wear them indoors while playing, napping or eating, and outdoors in the yard while doing its duty or while interacting with other dogs.

Although you might enjoy sharing your blanket with your pooch, perhaps (s)he would prefer a wearable blanket of his/her own. They definitely have a cute look with snob appeal. Who wouldn’t look twice at a well-dressed dog out on a walk with its owner?
