Product Review: PC Tune-Up from Large Software

Tune Up

A PC Registry cleaner and complete computer optimizer in one handy program is at your fingertips with registry and system backups for restoration and ActiveX protection. PC Tune-Up from Large Software is a complete registry and system performance optimizer with plenty going for it but beware the hidden nomenclatures. For amateur computer users backup usually means copy everything on your computer in case your computer crashes but here the backup is just of your computer operating system files and registry.

Other than a few misnamed parts the program works really well and does a good job of tuning up your PC with a focus on your system registry. The registry is a file location on your computer‘s hard drive that has all kinds of information about the computer programs on your system as well as how your computer operates. Without this system you would not have a computer and to keep your computer running well you need to occasionally clean out and do some other work with it.

A good cleaning program will get rid of entries in your registry that are for old programs and hardware you no longer have on your computer such as an old game or video card you upgraded. There are some other things you can do in your registry to keep your computer running like it was new or as close as you’re going to get like defragmenting your registry or checking for errors in entries.

Installation takes a short time and you need to run a bit of a lengthy first scan to start using the program, it takes under ten minutes to complete on a large system like I have. For many it may take a lot less but the time is not important, what it finds and fixes is. The program found plenty wrong the first time I ran it after purposely not running any other cleaners and installing and removing programs.

When you install and then remove a program there is often many registry entries left behind that no longer are needed by your system so these types of programs will clean them out. The program worked well on most of these but after running it I would run a couple of other registry cleaner programs to see what PC Tune-Up missed and it did miss a few. The other cleaners also did not catch some of the entries that this program did so it all evens out in the end for what it can and cannot catch for old entries and errors. There was nothing that would cause my computer to not run just things that add up over time and clog up the registry with unneeded data.

The program has a nice one touch button called Magic so you can perform the complete scan, fix and defrag of your registry as well as secure your registry against ActiveX security risks. ActiveX Controls are parts of programs used through Windows Internet Explorer for use on your computer to perform specific functions, kind of like mini programs.

Spyware and malware is often loaded onto computers as ActiveX control commands and using a blocking program or other means to deter invalid or harmful ActiveX controls from access to your computer does not always work. PC Tune-Up takes an offensive stance against these controls from being added to your computer by adding entries into your registry to compare the good ActiveX Commands with the bad ones.

Whether this works is hard to tell but they are adding more entries to your registry so I am not sure if I really like this feature. I like to keep the extra things in my computer such as registry entries and startup programs to a minimum to keep my computer running at top speed. The addition of these might be a benefit to someone who is not as knowledgeable about computer security and does not want to hassle with other protections against ActiveX attacks.

PC Tune-Up does a great job of getting rid of old stuff in your registry and I had almost no problems using it over the last two weeks except for one. I was trying to run a routine scan and when it got to the scan of checking Windows/MSDOS Program Shortcuts it froze up and starting acting funny. I tried several remedies like uninstalling and reinstalling the program but the same errors happened.

I ran a complete scan with WinASO’s Registry Optimizer and found a few problems that cleared up the problem with PC Tune-Up but I do not know what happened. This is probably not that big a deal but with some other things I found the program does not work as well as the company says on their web site.

PC Tune-Up is a handy and easy to use registry and system cleaner and performance booster that has all the necessary features needed for making your registry cleaner and working better. I am not sure if the problems I had were due to my computer or the program but I think the program does work fairly well regardless of the one problem I had. PC Tune-Up comes with the complete registry defragment and cleanup features and does a good job of cleaning out and optimizing your registry for you.

The addition of extra entries into your registry is not one I really like and the problems with the checking of for shortcuts never was explained to my satisfaction but overall the program worked well. For a complete all in one PC Tune-Up this worked pretty well, check it out from Large Software.
