Product Review: Original Chili-O Seasoning Mix by French’s

Chili Con Carne

Homemade Chili Con Carne is a delicious comfort food served with or without meat and a bed of rice on the side. You can add the traditional kidney beans along with onion and tomato. But if you are feeling a little more adventurous, you can even experiment and add other ingredients such as chickpeas, black beans, and cannelloni beans for extra protein and fibre. These ingredients can help enhance the taste of this delicious meal.

Original Chili-O Seasoning Mix by French’s

But if you want to create an authentic taste of Chili Con Carne and you do not have all the necessary spices to add to the dish, why not add a seasoning mix that can help boost the taste of your meal?

Ingredients

Original Chili-O Seasoning Mix by French’s can help you make a quick and easy Chili Con Carne within a matter of minutes. I rarely use seasoning mixes when preparing meals, but for a change, I decided to buy a seasoning mix. This 50g (1.75 oz) sachet of Chili-O Seasoning Mix by French’s cost just $0.50. The ingredients included wheat flour, chili pepper, salt, maltodextrin, sugar, paprika, onion powder, red pepper, garlic powder, and less then 2% silicon dioxide to prevent caking. Although I had some of these ingredients on hand I wanted to have some help in boosting the taste of a classic Chili Con Carne.

The good thing about this product is that it is low in calories and it is fat free. However, Original Chili-O Seasoning Mix by French’s contains very high levels of sodium in every serving, which amounts to 30% of a person’s daily sodium intake.

Taste Test

The aroma of the Chili Con Carne was delightful. I could smell it as I walked into the kitchen to a steaming pan of chili. It tasted spicy, but not too overpowering and hot for my taste. I could detect the chili powder and black pepper that was used in the seasoning mix without any distraction away from the overall meal. The only thing I did not like about the taste of the Chili Con Carne was the high sodium content. I tried to overcome this by only eating a small amount of the Chili Con Carne compared with what I would normally when eating a homemade Chili Con Carne.

I would recommend Original Chili-O Seasoning Mix by French’s. But I would suggest using just a small amount of the seasoning mix if you are trying to reduce the sodium content in your diet and using the rest of the seasoning mix on another occasion.
