Ceramic Paint, Coffee Mug, Dick Blick, Pop Art

Pop Art is a fun and contemporary source for craft projects your can make with the kids. This Pop Art craft project is fun, functional, and best of all easy to do. This project is perfect for kids of all ages and is the perfect way to expose your youngsters to Pop art.

You can make this Pop Art inspire mug for less than $20. Your kids will be entertained for hours and they can drink their hot chocolate out of it this winter!

To Make a Pop Art Coffee Mug You Will Need:

A Large Coffee Mug (Plain works best so you have lots of room to decorate)
Ceramic Paints
Small round paintbrushes

To start you need to purchase a coffee mug suitable for this craft project. I recommend a coffee mug in a solid color. The bigger the mug, the more room for some Pop Art work.

To get some inspiration for Pop Art here is a quick explanation of what it is. Pop art was a artistic movement that became known world wide in the late 1950s. It became popular in England and the United States. Pop Art is Characterized by themes and techniques drawn from advertising and comic books. Basically evryday objects we are exposed to.

Pop art is acesible and open to everyone. Unlike many art styles before it., Pop art appeals to a broad audience, purposely so, and is widely known. Almost everyoen knows of Andy Warhol and his infmaous Campbell’s Soup Cans.

Basically, you can find inspiration for your Pop Art mugs everyewhere. From a class picture to the box of Cheerios on the kitchen table. Pop Art lets you get inspired by your enivroment during this craft project.

I like to paint with small dots or points on the mug for this craft project. The inspiration comes from comic books and Andy Warhol.

Let the kids paint an outline of their Pop Art inspiration on their mug. They should paint this in black cemraic paint so that they can add color later.

To transfer a school picture onto a coffee mug make a photo copy of a wallet sized class photo. Have the kids use a needle to poke small delicate holes following the outline of their head, eyes, nose, and mouth. Don’t leave out any details. Tape the cut out photocopy onto the side of your mug with masking tape. Dip your round paint brush lightly in the black cermanic paint. Lightly pounce it over the holes. Carefully remove the paper and tape. Yu should have an outline of a self portrait on the mug. For a Andy Warhol/ Marylin Monroe insiration let the paint dry and reapeat the image as many times on the mug as poisble. Once all of the black paint has dried the kids can add color. Bright pink hair, blue eyeshadlow, green lips, and orange skin are all fun ways to incoporate color into their pop art.

You can use this transfer meathod for almost any image. Once tip though: don’t get too much paint on your brush. You can lightly dab it on a paper towel to remove paint. If you have ever stenciled keep that technique in mind.

Younger kids may want to do more simple designs. Older kids might find they can free hand their art on this craft project.
