Pirate Themed Party Games and Activities for Kids

Ear Muffs, Hangover Cures, Invisible Ink

Are you getting ready to host a pirate themed party for your little ones? Do you have all of your plans already in place? If not, you may want to take a brief glance at a handful of my pirate themed activities and game ideas. Here they are:

Treasure Hunt

If you ask me, no pirate themed party worth its Jolly Roger would be complete without a treasure hunt. There are several different ways that you could set up the treasure hunt. For instance, you could fill up a plastic pirate’s chest with candy gold coins and bury it in the yard. You could also hide the pirate chest in a sand box or inside an old tree.

One of my favorite ways to set up a treasure hunt is to use a treasure map written in homemade, invisible ink. That way, the kids have to find a way to unlock what the map says before they can even begin to go looking for the treasure. Should you want to give it a try, there is a recipe for homemade, invisible ink posted on the Science Kids website.

Pirate Shoot Out

I have also found that a good way to let the kids burn off some energy is to hold a pirate shoot out. In order to play the game, you’ll need some Squeeze Powered Foam Dart Shooters and a few targets. The Squeeze Powered Foam Dart Shooters tend to retail for less than $2 each through specialty retailers, toy shops and discount stores. I was able to purchase mine at the discount store for a buck apiece. As far as the targets go, I’d suggest using blown-up photos of famous pirates and pirate ships. Once you have all of your supplies on hand, simply set up the targets and let the kids shoot at them.

Pirate Ship Races

Do you care if the kids get wet and make a mess? If not, you may want to let them make their own pirate ships and race them. The pirate ships may be made out of plastic water or soda bottles. Instructions that will help the kids make the pirate ships are posted on the Education website. After they are done building the ships, fill up a baby pool full of water and let the races begin!

Cannonball Toss

Last but not least, you may want to let the kids play a pirate version of “hot potato” called “cannonball toss.” All you need in order to play the game is a Styrofoam or Durafoam ball that has been spray painted black and some pirate music. Ask the kids to stand in a circle and toss the cannon ball to one another as the pirate music plays. When the music stops, the person that has the cannon ball in his or her hands has to leave the circle. Keep playing the game until only one pirate remains. The remaining pirate will be considered the winner.
