One of Georgia’s Most Beautiful Places

Lookout Mountain, Ruby Falls

One of Georgia’s most beautiful places, Cloudland Canyon is located on the west side of Lookout Mountain. Native Americans have used this site for hundreds (maybe thousands) of years to perform sacred rituals and ceremonies. The quartz found there was thought to contain powerful energy. Today its very popular because of the enchanting view and wildlife.

Some of the trails here are steep. From top to bottom the canyon is around 1000 feet but it does vary depending on where you are. You can camp with your own tent or rent a cabin if you stay overnight. You can even bring your RV. There are also other activities like backpacking, tennis, swimming, picnicking and several easy walking trails. The park covers 2,300 acres of land. The camping sites provide privacy and are not crowded.

At the bottom of Cloudland Canyon there are two waterfalls that form pools on the canyon floor. For safety reasons no one is allowed to be in the water or too close to the waterfalls. There are large signs posted to warn you of this. To get to the waterfalls you must make a difficult hike, which involves a staircase with at least 600 steps. It is meant for more experienced hikers.

The entire canyon was underwater millions of years ago. In fact the canyon itself was formed from an earthquake while it was still underwater. Looking at the walls while hiking the canyon you can see the different layers which each represent a different time period going back millions of years. This is a great spot to study geology or find fossils (although I’m not sure if that’s allowed. Check before you do it).

Many people feel very peaceful and relaxed while in the environment this canyon creates. The falls form a mist that gives them an almost magical feel. The forest is full of wildlife and you could easily find a place to sit and enjoy the scenery. The Native Americans felt this site was powerful and holds a lot of natural energy. They believe the energy not only comes from the ground itself but also the areas of flowing water.

Cloudland Canyon is located 18 miles west of Lafayette on GA Route 136. While visiting Cloudland Canyon you should check out what other sites Lookout Mountain has to offer like Ruby Falls. There is a $2.00 parking fee to get into the park and the entrance closes to visitors around 10 PM.
