Old Window Frames

Vinyl Windows, Window Frame

When you replace those old wooden window frames with a new fabulous vinyl windows, don’t throw them all away. Keep several different sizes to use as craft/carpentry projects. Old wooden windows can be used to make tables, art work or frames. Using your imagination can cause that old window frame to become a work of art.

Large wooden windows can be used as tops for coffee tables. The glass can be left in or removed and replaced with panels made from Medium-density fiberboard (MDF). Mirrors or colorful tiles can be glued onto the Medium-density fiberboard (MDF) for a great looking table top. Paint treatments can make the panels look like marble insets or you might like a decoupage treatment. Fabric or paper cut outs of flowers or even family photos can be used in decoupage.

A shadow box coffee or end table can be had by building a box to fit your table top about 3 to 4 inches in height and placing the window on top. Objects of your choice can then be placed underneath the window frame. The window can be laid on top of the table or piano hinges can be used to attach the frame to the table for easy access to the collectibles.

An old window can be made into a table by putting legs on the frame itself. Table legs come in many styles and lengths. You could have a side table, coffee table or a nice table for the porch or patio. There are leg brackets that can be attached to the bottom of your frame. This bracket has a place to screw in the legs. These can be found at local or big box hardware stores. An easy and quick way to have a unique table in your home.

Windows make good picture frames. One interesting look is to apply a photo or painting on the back of the window to simulate looking into the garden or at the beach. Again you could opt to leave the glass in or take it out. You can paint the window frame to match your decor or the picture it displays.

In the garden is a good place to use an old window frame. I have seen many beautiful art pieces for the porch or garden using old windows at festivals. Some were decorated using a stained glass affect or the glass can be taken out and the frame hung in your flower gardens to give some height to the area. A mere coat or two of paint can transform an old window frame to a conversation piece.

A favorite place to hang a window frame is on the side of a shed or other outdoor building. If the glass is left in you can paint a scene or a funny animal face on the glass using paint specifically for glass. Window boxes full of pretty plants can be hung at the bottom of a frame. This gives the affect that a window exists where there is none.

Make your old wooden window frame an extension of your personality. Use colors and themes that make you and visitors to your home and garden feel happy and relaxed. Remember: Recycle, Reduce and Reuse. Help our nation go Green.
