Let’s face it. Sometimes a good vibrator can be a woman’s best friend, especially if she’s at her so-called sexual peak. A couple of years ago, I was in the market for a new vibrator because my old one was worn out and my husband was deployed to Iraq. It was my husband, by the way, who told me about the Hitachi Magic Wand, a massager that often gets used as a sensual aid.
I looked on the Internet for the Magic Wand and found it for sale on several Web sites for about $40. Many online reviews I had read about this product described it as an excellent tool for women who need a little help achieving orgasm. I decided to order one, but opted not to purchase the optional attachments.
My special friend arrives
I was very eager to try my new Hitachi Magic Wand, yet I was surprised to see that there was nothing on the packaging that indicated the Magic Wand was supposed to be used as anything other than a regular massager. The directions describe the Magic Wand as a device meant to be used on the arms, legs, and back muscles; there’s no indication that this product should be used near the genital region. However, many women do use the Magic Wand as a sensual aid and it can be purchased at sex shops and drugstores.
First impression
To be honest, I’m not very impressed with the way the Magic Wand looks. It’s made of a somewhat lightweight white plastic with a smooth, flexible, rubber head. It’s about twelve inches long, weighs a little over a pound, and has a toggle switch that can be used to adjust the speed from low to high. The power cord is also lightweight and only seven feet long, which can make plugging it in a challenge. There’s also not much of a difference between the low and high speeds. The low speed has a vibration frequency of 5000 times a minute, while the high speed vibrates at 6000 times a minute.
This device is also designed to be used in North America. It uses a 110-120 volt power source and the manufacturers don’t recommend using it with an electric converter. That means the Magic Wand would not be a good travel companion to locations outside of North America, where power sources are different. However, I do think that the Magic Wand is the perfect size for travel inside North America. It’s lightweight and compact, which makes it easy to stow in a suitcase.
First use
I plugged in the Magic Wand and tried both power settings. First, I tried out the Magic Wand as an ordinary massager. I found it pleasant enough when I used it on my back muscles. As a sensual aid, however, I didn’t think the Magic Wand was all that magical. The vibrations weren’t powerful enough for me and it took a very long time to get the desired erotic effect. The manufacturers don’t recommend using the Magic Wand for more than 30 minutes per session. The directions make it sound like using the Magic Wand for longer than 30 minutes could be detrimental to one’s health, but I think the reason for the time limit is more because using it longer could make the motor overheat. I noticed that the Magic Wand gets hotter the longer it’s in use; hot enough to burn the fingers.
Safety concerns
The manufacturers don’t recommend using the Magic Wand near water, open wounds, or on swollen areas. There’s also a warning against using the Magic Wand near the thyroid gland. I’m not sure about the reasoning for that warning, but I’ve always heeded it anyway.
My overall impression
I don’t think the Hitachi Magic Wand is much of a spellbinder. While it may be a great toy for some women, it’s just not powerful enough for me. I also don’t think it’s very well made. I think the Magic Wand functions just fine as an ordinary back massager, though if I were using it for that purpose, I would probably wish for a heavier duty massager with more speed settings. Of course, now that I’ve tried the Magic Wand, I would also choose a vibrator with more speed settings. Suffice it to say, I wouldn’t purchase this product again, even though some women swear by it.
