My Favorite Movie Quotes

Goldie Hawn

I watch a lot of movies, so picking my top 10 movie quotes was very hard to do! There are so many … but I finally narrowed it down and here are my picks.

My favorite movie quotes from Overboard, released in 1987

Movie Quote: Ever since I came through that door, I have cooked, cleaned, scrubbed, chopped wood- I’ve waited on you, your dogs, your kids and your friends – in hopes that I would remember some shred of my life, and now it is entirely clear to me why I have chosen to block it out!
Quoted by: Annie (Goldie Hawn)
Context in the movie: Annie (Goldie Hawn) said this to Dean (Kurt Russell) after a long hard day of working hard and feeling frustrated and unappreciated.
Impact it had on me: I’ve had a lot of traumatic things happen in my life that I choose to block out … I think it’s selective amnesia or something like that!

Movie Quote: You may have wanted cedar, but you didn’t ask for cedar.
Quoted by: This was said by Dean (Kurt Russell)
Context in the movie: Dean (Kurt Russell) said this to Annie (Goldie Hawn) when she was complaining about the closet he had built for her, telling him he had not done the job according to her specifications.
Impact it had on me: This line reminds me that it’s always a good idea to be clear when making requests of others. A lot of misunderstanding could be avoided if we would just take the time to review what we’ve said and make sure the other person understands things exactly as we want them to.

My favorite movie quotes from Dirty Dancing, released in 1987

Movie Quote: Nobody puts Baby in a corner.
Quoted by: Johnny Castle (Patrick Swayze)
Context in the movie: Johnny (Patrick Swayze) says this to Baby’s (Jennifer Grey) father as he comes in the room for the final dance. Baby has always been sheltered by her father, and is a daddy’s girl in the beginning of the movie. But as her love grows for Johnny, she starts to spread her wings and be her own person and stands up for who, and what, she believes in.
Impact it had on me: I have always wanted someone to back me up and stand up for me like that.

Movie Quote: I’m scared of everything! I’m scared of what I saw. I’m scared of what I did. Of who I am. Most of all I’m scared of walking out of this room and never feeling the rest of my whole life the way that I feel when I’m with you!
Quoted by: Frances (Baby) Houseman (Jennifer Grey)
Context in the movie: Baby (Jennifer Grey) said this to Johnny (Patrick Swayze) when he told her she was the bravest person he had ever met. She realized she was falling in love with him but knew they came from different worlds.
Impact it had on me: I think every person in the world looks for their one true soul mate. If you are lucky to find that one person who is truly your soul mate, then it is scary to think about not having that person in your life anymore, and you never want to let go of the feelings you have inside when you are with that person. A true soul mate loves you for who you are, respects everything about you, and builds you up in all areas of your life!

My favorite movie quotes from Forrest Gump, released in 1994

Movie Quote: Remember what I told you, Forrest. You’re no different than anybody else is. Did you hear what I said, Forrest? You’re the same as everybody else. You are no different.
Quoted by: Mrs. Gump (Sally Field)
Context in the movie: Mama Gump (Sally Field) said this to Forrest (Tom Hanks) to let him know that even though he had braces on his legs he could do anything he wanted to do if he set his mind to it.
Impact it had on me: We need to look beyong physical disabilities or perceived handicaps in other people and see them for the person they are inside … or for the person they can become with the right tools and coaching.

Movie Quote: Sometimes I guess there just aren’t enough rocks.
Quoted by: Forrest (Tom Hanks)
Context in the movie: Forrest (Tom Hanks) said this to Jenny (Robin Wright) while she was crying and throwing rocks at the house she grew up in.
Impact it had on me: This line reminds me that sometimes there is nothing we can do to fully ease our pain and sorrow, and that life keeps moving no matter if we’re ready or not.

My favorite movie quotes from Pretty Woman, released in 1990

Movie Quote: You work on commission don’t you? Big mistake, big, huge!
Quoted by: Vivian (Julia Roberts)
Context in the movie: Vivian (Julia Roberts) says this to some snooty shopkeepers after they would not allow her to shop in the store. She comes back in the store after spending a ton of money elsewhere and tells them what a big mistake they made by turning her away.
Impact it had on me: I’ve always liked this line because it reminds me that you shouldn’t always let other peolpe’s opinion matter to you. People tend to judge on outward appearances and often miss out on a truly great person by being so narrow minded.

Movie Quote: I want the fairy tale.
Quoted by: Vivian (Julia Roberts)
Context in the movie: Vivian (Julia Roberts) says this to Edward (Richard Gere) when he was trying to get her to stay with him for a while longer on their last day together.
Impact it had on me: Never lower your standards and always go for the brass ring! Ask for what you want and don’t settle for second best.

My favorite movie quote from Jerry Maguire, released in 1996

Movie Quote: I’ve got this great guy who loves my son, and he sure does like me a lot.
Quoted by: Dorothy (Rene Zellweger)
Context in the movie: Dorothy (Rene Zellweger) says this to her sister, and is talking about her boss Jerry Maguire (Tom Cruise). They have been dating and she falls in love with him, but he is just in the relationship for convenience and maybe a sense of guilt for causing her to quit her former job. So her sister is trying to talk her out of marrying him.
Impact it had on me: This line makes me sad because there are a lot of single women out there who settle for less just to have a father figure for their kids. They stop looking for “Mr. Right” and settle for “Mr. He Will Do”.

My favorite movie quote from As Good As It Gets, released in 1997

Movie Quote: You make me want to be a better man.
Quoted by: Melvin Udall (Jack Nicholson)
Context in the movie: Melvin Udall (Jack Nicholson) says this to Carol Connelly (Helen Hunt) one night when he’s trying to convince her to give him another chance, and to have a relationship with him.
Impact it had on me: This line gives me hope that we can all have a positive impact in the lives of others if we try.
