Must Have Android App: Where’s My Droid

Android Market

Where’s My Droid is a free Android app that is a must have if you tend to lose your Android phone. We’ve all been there. You lose your Android smart phone, however you know it’s turned on, so your first thought is to call it and find it by following it’s ring. However you soon realize that your phone is either on vibrate or silent mode. You may think finding it will be next to impossible, but Where’s My Droid will bail you out of this sticky situation.

Where’s My Droid is a free application available in the Android market. After installing the app, you can access the application settings and program an Attention Word. When you lose your phone, you can have a friend or family member send a text message to your phone, and the body of the text should be your Attention Word. When your phone receives the text message with the Attention Word, it will not only adjust your phone’s ringer to its high volume setting, it will ring for 30 seconds, 60 seconds or 5 minutes, depending on the option you select during the app’s setup process. I leave my Where’s My Droid app set to ring for 5 minutes, as sometimes it takes me quite awhile to find my phone if it’s lost in another room in my home.

Where’s My Droid also has a feature to find your phone’s location using GPS. If you’re out on the town and you arrive back home and realize your phone is not with you, the text message and email features won’t be much help. You can use the GPS location feature to find your phone anywhere in the world! To find your phone, simply send a text message or email to your Android’s phone number, however use the GPS Attention Word you programmed in the app’s setup menu. Your phone will text you back with its latitude and longitude location, along with a Google Maps link to its location. If you’re really smart phone savvy, you can then use your phone’s navigation system to direct you right to your phone!

If you would like to use the email feature, you can send a text message to your phone by composing an email to the following address based on your carrier:

T-Mobile: [email protected]
Verizon: [email protected]
Sprint: [email protected]

Put your Attention Word in the subject line of your email message; you can leave the body of the message blank. The phone’s developer has suggested that this feature works best when emailing from a Gmail account.

Where’s My Droid is absolutely a must have free app for all Android users. It has already helped me find my phone a handful of times. It’s especially great when you’re in a rush and your phone is lost in one of those hard to find places, such as in the couch cushions, a laundry basket or under your car seat. Many other users agree with me, as Where’s My Droid has been downloaded over a million times and has four and a half stars out of five from over 40,000 users as of April 2011.
