Movie Review: Sinbad: Where U Been?

Comedy Clubs, Standup Comedy

Sinbad is back in a new Comedy Central special after more than ten years hiding from the spotlight, actually hard at work in comedy clubs and smaller venues but still plying his trade of comedy.

Sinbad has been out of the spotlight for several years, okay over ten years but he has not been hiding, just working in the smaller clubs and venues that are the staple of many comedians. While he has been honing his art and getting more material over the years he uses the most common and familiar material that also happens to work the best, real life.

Sinbad uses his own uncommon life and events that have occurred to him over the years as well as other real life situations we are all familiar with as his main material for a great and very funny hour and a half special. While Sinbad does use adult situations and occasional language it is nothing compared to many other Comedy Central specials and is so low key I would not hesitate to let teens watch it.

Sinbad was first in the military, Air Force no less, and would go to town to perform stand up at local comedy clubs and performed in the US Air Force performing show Tops in Blue. He has performed standup comedy on stage, been in numerous movies and a few series on television such as a spin off from the Cosby Show called A Different World.

Sinbad has his own style of comedy and in this hour and a half special he does a great job of clearing the air for the title of his special Sinbad: Where U Been? Sinbad has several years of not only comedy on stage and movies but television series under his belt so stage is a familiar setting for him and he does shine.

His comedy is great and he uses the everyday events such as President Obama, the recession, real life relationships and of course his tax problems for his material. He does a great job on stage and uses impromptu questions and even a moment of a late comer going to their seat in the front row so he is fast on his feet material wise.

Sinbad uses a lot his experiences with his up and down relationship as examples of the real things that are funny in our own world and how a real relationship works. He also explains the real things like why men want to date someone their own age and just why girls go after those older men.

Sinbad continues using the real world and everyday situations to show how we ourselves are funny, we just need someone with a little insight to show and explain to us why. He does a great job with his clean comedy and really only goes for the slightly risky use of sex like a few quick references to sex.

The entire show is more of a PG-13 rating if they had bothered to go for a rating but I don’t think Comedy Central even bothers so they just mark the cover as unrated. Sinbad does a great job with his comedy and spends a good part of the show interacting with the audience and using questions he asks but he probably knows the answers he is going to get because they are real life.

Sinbad also starts his show playing the guitar and finishes with a band for a great addition to the show making it a quick variety show before and after the more than an hour of straight comedy. The bonus content on the DVD edition is about 45 minutes of material like back stage clips with Sinbad and others directly in front of the camera.

Much of the extra feature is Sinbad talking about his career and music interests interspersed with additions of others from the show. It’s not as funny as his routine but is interesting to watch and find out what he’s been up to and about the others on stage with him at the beginning and end of the show.

The audio and video is great with very clear audio and you can clearly understand Sinbad throughout the whole routine and the music sounds great. Video is also great with good camera angles and the occasional peek at the audience for variety but the standard definition DVD has no problems at all.

Sinbad: Where U Been? is a great comedy special and a must have for any home theatre collection for that safe but very funny comedy routine. Sinbad: Where U Been? is a classic funny comedy routine with a great comedian doing what he does best making us laugh.
