Michelob Ultra – a Beer Review

Michelob Ultra

Can you have your cake and eat it, too? Michelob Ultra beer seems to fall under both. It is a beer, it is low in carbohydrates and calories yet it has beer aficionados howling at the moon in protest.

Let’s face it. The have-your-cake-and-eat-it-too crowd is winning the war. In the United States the sales of low-cal or low-carb beer has been soaring. Apparently obesity has become rampant and those who indulge in brew desire to cut calories at the cost of taste in order to continue their repast.

There are several beers on the market that address this consumer interest. Amongst the throng of ‘diet’ beers is Michelob’s Ultra Beer. The product we tested were the 12 ounce aluminum cans that stated “2.6 grams of carbs” and “95 calories.

Poured properly into a glass this beer produced a small head of foam and was almost clear in color. Served chilled this beer tasted a bit “watery” as one tester put it, yet he enjoyed the clean, neat, taste. Another tester, and a true fan of ale, said that of all the diet beers he had tasted this was the best. He also stated that he believes a beer should be a beer and not “beer water.”

Another of our tasters said that the Michelob Ultra tasted less bitter than other beers offered in this niche. She said that Ultra was easy to quaff and enabled her to do so during an evening of friendly revelry. She was adamant that it was a good beer and that she did not suffer the usual hangover. Interesting.

I decided to try this beer with food. I fixed up some good home-made nachos and my wife fixed some fantastic sardine sandwiches. This was all set up for week-end football viewing so there were various dishes filled with nuts and others filled with crudites. One special cooler held the Ultra and that is the only beer I served.

I liked the taste of Michelob Ultra. It was not anything special but for a beer of its ilk it tasted ‘clean’ and refreshing with snack foods. It did not leave me feeling bloated after quaffing a few cans and noshing on snacks.

I would recommend Michelob Ultra for those who are counting calories. It does not taste as good as some premium beers but it does not taste bad. It seems to do what the producers of it say it does and does so in a somewhat tasty form.

I would say, give it a try.
