Mason Jar Candle Holders

My sister is thinking about using mason jars as part of her décor for her spring wedding next year. After browsing the web, I have found that there are so many ways you can use a mason jar as a candleholder. It’s really interesting the different ways and styles you can make with a mason jar.

The most popular way to use a mason jar for a candleholder especially for a wedding or reception is to just place a candle in the bottle of the jar and tie a fancy ribbon around the mouth of the outside of the jar. Place them on tables and you have a pretty nice centerpiece or candleholder.

Another awesome idea is to fill the jar part of the way with water and place a floating candle in the jar. You could also color the water so if you are using this for a wedding or party you could coordinate the colored water to go with the theme. If your wedding colors are pink and orange then color some of the jars with red food coloring just a drop or two to make it pink and use orange coloring in the other jars. Then place in a simple white floating candle and you got a pretty nice set up. Alternate the color of ribbons on the jars as well and you got an even fancier set up. For a Halloween party, do orange water and float black candles. For Christmas, do red or green water and float the opposite colored candles.

Mason jars can be filled with a variety of items that will go with a theme of a room such as shells, colored pebbles, buttons, acorns, pine cones, candy corn, etc. If you place a small flowerpot shaped candleholder in the mouth of the mason jar, you can then place a votive candle inside the mini flowerpot and voila … an awesome candleholder that dubs as a storage container or decorative jar.

You could tie twin or wire to the outside of the mouth of the jar and hang them in trees outside for a beautiful effect for an evening party. Be sure to hang them high enough if it is a tree that people may be walking under so that no one hits them or knocks them off.

Epson salt placed in the bottom of the jars make a great snow effect and is perfect for the holidays. It also makes a sturdy base for long taper candles to stand up in. A few jars full of salt and candles would make a beautiful centerpiece for your holiday table and if you have a pine tree outside, go cut a few branches and bring in some pine cones to decorate the table between the jars. It would be breathtaking.

If you use sand in the bottom of the jars and placed taper candles in them that would also be great for a beach themed room or party. Drop in a few small shells in the sand for a greater effect.

The water idea is one of my favorites. Another great spin on it would be to fill the jars with regular water and then place a small branch of leaves or herbs inside the water. You could use the small flowerpot votive holders on top or you could also float candles in the water as well. During the holidays, you could float some fresh cranberries in the water along with your floating candle for a really festive piece.

You could also paint the jars or glue scrapbook paper on the outside or ribbon, fabric or lace.

Think outside the box and you can come up with some really creative ideas. Make a cobweb on the outside of the jar using black pipe cleaners twisted around each other. Or glue tissue paper on the outside of the jars and paint faces for Halloween. Orange tissue paper could be a pumpkin jar, green can be a monster jar, white for ghosts and purple could be a scary vampire jar. Place a candle on the inside of the jar and it will illuminate the awesome Halloween face you made.
