WBA world middleweight champion, Martin Murray, is set to get the next shot at Sergio Martinez, and he isn’t worried about the fact that he’ll be stuck inside a ring with one of the pound-for-pound best boxers around in world.
The two will fight for Martinez’ WBC middleweight title on April 27, at a yet to be determined stadium in Argentina.
Many boxing fans expect Martinez to make quick work out of Murray, but the 30 year-old Brit couldn’t disagree more. As far as he’s concerned, Martinez will be in for a rude awakening when the two square up.
“He began at the bottom and today he’s the most powerful in the division. But I’m better and can beat him,” Murray said at a press conference, per Sky Sports. “It will be a great opportunity for me to show the world who I am.”
Still undefeated as a professional boxer, Murray will be in for the toughest test in his career when he faces Martinez on April 27. However, it’s also a huge opportunity for Murray, as a win against Martinez will propel him into superstardom. WBA world light-middleweight champion, Austin Trout, legitimatized himself as a top contender in the division with his upset victory against Miguel Cotto, and Murray will try to follow suit.
Martin’s crisp boxing technique has had a lot to do with his success inside the ring, but it’s hard to see the Brit out-boxing a savvy veteran like Martinez — who put on an impressive clinic during his last outing against Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. in September.
Fortunately, for Murray, he’s done a decent job of landing power shots lately, stopping five of his last six opponents. If Martin is able to push the pace and consistently land punches, a competitive fight might just break out inside the ring.
