Marine Cake Ideas

Cake Ideas, Fondant, Gi Joe, Iwo Jima

The pride marines have for their branch of the military is immense. If you are planning a party for a member of the United States Marine Corp, there are several cakes that you can make for the guest of honor in varying difficulty that will help share the pride. By making your own cake, you have control over the personalization of the cake and it is less expensive than buying a cake from a bakery or cake shop.

Dog Tags

For a simple cake, make a dog tag. Bake a rectangular sheet cake and carve the corners off to create the dog tag shape. Use black gel food coloring to color white icing grey and frost the cake. Another option is to frost the cake with white icing and then use an air brush to spray the cake silver with edible paints. Then roll out sheets of fondant and cut out letters with a cookie cutter to write the guest of honors name and other vital statics.

The Seal

Each branch of the United States military has its own unique seal. The Marine Corp is no different. To create a cake that proudly displays the seal, make a two layer round cake. Once the cake is complete, frost the cake with white icing. Roll out fondant in red and blue to make the colored circles of the seal. Print the symbol from the seal and the wording from the seal onto edible sugar paper. Place these on top of the cake. Then roll out strips of gold fondant into long ropes. Twist two of the ropes together to make a braid to put around the outside of the seal. Place a second strip around the inner circle. Use a star tip with black icing to pipe a design around the bottom of the cake. Then pipe a birthday or best wishes message around the sides of the cake to finish it.

Four Tiered Cake

For the more artistic bakers, a four tiered cake is a great way to not only honor the Marine Corps but also the guest of honor. You will need four tiers of round cake in descending sizes. Cover the bottom tier in white cake and then add red fondant stripes onto it. For the second tier, cover it in blue fondant and cover it in white fondant stars. The third tier can be covered in white fondant that you decorate to show the guest of honors position and rank in the Marine Corp. For the final tier, again display the seal. This time, make the seal out of molded chocolate.

Iwo Jima

The Iwo Jima Marine Corp monument in Washington, DC is the iconic image of the marines raising the flag at Iwo Jima. You can recreate this memorable moment in history on a cake. Bake a sheet cake and frost it with white icing. Once the frosting is complete, print the image of the Iwo Jima memorial onto sugar paper and place it on top.
