Make Poinsettia Ear Muffs for Holiday Gift Giving

Ear Muffs, Faux Fur

Do you have family, friends and co-workers that adore poinsettias? If so, you may want to think about making each one of them a pair of poinsettia ear muffs. Based on my experience, poinsettia ear muffs make whimsical, festive and thoughtful gifts for those that live in cold climates. They are also trouble-free to create. With that said, here’s what you need to know in order to make a pair:

Supplies Needed

In order to finish this winter craft, you will need to invest in an ear muff frame. There are a handful of places that sell them. One retailer that sells plain ear muff frames is Jones and Vandermeer. You can also typically purchase velvet covered ear muff frames through Montano’s Collectible Creations. On average, Montano’s Collectible Creations tends to sell their ear muff frames for $7.25. Jones and Vandermeer, on the other hand, typically sell their ear muff frames for $12.

Of course you will also need to invest in a yard of red faux fur, a bag of polyester batting, sewing supplies, two foam boards and two fabric poinsettias. You can usually purchase fabric poinsettias through select retailers or find patterns online to make your own. The other items should be readily available for purchase through most large craft outlets.

Assemble the Ear Muffs

Start making the poinsettia ear muffs by measuring and cutting four identical circles out of the red faux fur. The circles should be large enough to cover the round portions of the ear muff frame. You’ll also want to cut two slightly smaller size circles out of the foam board. They are designed to help bolster the ear muffs’ structure.

Next, place two of the faux fur circles on top of each other, wrong side out. Then partially sew them together. You’ll need to leave an opening large enough to allow you to slide the faux fur pouch over top of the ear muff frame. Repeat the process until you have two identical faux fur pouches. Keep going by turning the faux fur pouches inside out. At this point, the faux fur should be facing outward. Then sew a fabric poinsettia to the outside of each pouch.

Next, slide the pouches over the ear muff frame’s rings. The fabric poinsettias should be facing outward. Proceed by stuffing each pouch with polyester batting and foam board. Personally, I would recommend positioning the foam board in a way that leaves it completely surrounded by the polyester batting. Doing so tends to make for a more comfortable pair of ear muffs. Once the ear muffs have been stuffed sufficiently, sew up the opening. At this point your poinsettia ear muffs will be ready for use.
