#luciferiscoming … The Twitterverse Has Been Warned..

Lucifer, , Winchester

Lucifer is coming!

Users of the social networking site, Twitter, woke up Thursday ( 9/10/2009) morning to find this as one of the top trending topics on the site. Instantly, heart rates raced, tempers flared, and chaos ensued.

Those who actually knew why the tag was so popular were easy to spot. They also used the #Supernatural tag in their tweets, indicating the name of the show which caused this mass hysteria.

Supernatural is a paranormal comedy/drama featured on the CW network. The show features a story arch showcasing two brothers out to save the world from evil. Evil, as in demons, restless spirits, shapeshifters, witches, and even vampires (but not like any you’ve ever seen before). The Winchester boys, Sam and Dean, have seen their fair share of battle wounds during this mission. Dean even got dragged into hell where he was ripped apart over and over for months (In hell time, that would be years, though. Extra-ouch) before being saved by an angel.

The season four finale ended with Sam Winchester accidentally releasing Lucifer. We see the earth cracking open and … Bam. End of show. So we’ve all been holding our collective breath for today.

September 10, 2009.

Lucifer is coming.

Hence the tag so popular on Twitter. However, it appears there are people upset with this because they believe Satanists have now taken over the site and are spewing their venom over the internet. They are rebelling by grabbing their bibles and quoting verses, or just plain ripping into those using the #luciferiscoming tag, all but banishing the tweeters to hell. A very simple search of the tag which is on clear display under trending topics would show what all the fuss is about, but people do not seem inclined to do this. Either they are too busy spouting out scripture, or they have checked it out and think the viewers of Supernatural are pure evil for watching the show.

It is very interesting how the twitterverse is reacting to the tag. I admit, as a fan of the show which does have an almost cult-like following, I was aware of the plan to label posts with the #luciferiscoming tag today. And part of the reason this tag was thought up was for the purpose of amusement and sheer curiosity. What would the world think if people started tagging everything #luciferiscoming? We chuckled at the thought of people thinking Satanists had taken over the site and were rallying together to try to overrun the world, but I don’t think anyone expected it to be this much of a fuss.

It’s very strange, the violent reaction some are giving. If they would stop repelling Supernatural fans with holy water for a moment and watch the show, they might realize that the show itself is about Good vs. Evil and that Dean Winchester was taken out of hell by an angel to stop the apocalypse. Sure, he accidentally started it, but he’s only human. We make our mistakes. He’ll fix it by the end of the season.

So, for those obsessed over the #luciferiscoming phenomenon, don’t worry. Lucifer is coming to the CW network at 9:00 P.M. eastern time tonight, September 10, 2009… but it only lasts an hour. Relax and breathe.

As of 11:00 a.m. #luciferiscoming was the second most popular trending topic on Twitter, and #supernatural was in the fourth spot.
