A few months ago I dyed my blond locks jet black, and I grew extremely fond of it. The transformation took a bit of getting used to, but the darker hair brought out my green eyes, so I stood with it.
This past month though I had grown bored of the same jet black hair. I wanted to do something different. Maybe add some highlights. While browsing at my local Rite Aide, I came across a slew of products I had used in the past. Colour Rays by LOreal Paris. I ad used the red dye before with great results on blond hair.
According to the box though, these deep bold colors could be used on even the darkest of hair colors. I picked up Fuchsia Flash. The girl on the box had black hair like mine, and the purple color was easily detectable. I expected results to be exact. A deep dark colored purple mixed in with my jet black hair, just like the gal on the box!
Set Up:
Setting the dye up was easy. I simply poured step one which was a white stinky liquid, in with step 2, which was a creamy red color.
I found it strange seeing how the color was supposed to be a purple, yet the cream was blood red.
The kit came with a brush wand which gives you control over where the highlights go. I had used this brush in the past and already knew it worked well.
Before dying though, I had to straighten my hair to make sure I was getting precise highlighter strands. After my hair was fully straightened all I had to do was dip the wand into the dye dish and brush the colored dye into strands that I pulled apart from the rest of the head.
What I Loved:
This is probably the best thing about the kit. The fact that the strand you paint, is the only strand that will get color. You can softly place the colored strand back down and it will not mix in or dye strands around it. You have complete control over where the dye goes.
I also loved how the instruction manual gave mini instruction on the types of looks you could go for with the Colour Rays. I was trying to achieve an all over look, with a bit of color strands here and there.
Once I had strands all colored, next I had to wait 30 minutes to rinse. I found the timing to be difficult because 30 minutes ago I had applied color to the first strand I began working with, and 1 minute ago I finished the last strand.
I simply waited an additional 30 minutes to ensure full coverage of color. I didn’t want any faded areas.
After 30 minutes I hopped into the shower with the small plastic tube of special Colour Rays shampoo/conditioner that the kit came with. First I let the red color rinse from my hair until the water ran clear. Then I applied the shampoo/conditioner. I let it sit for a good 3 minutes and then I rinsed.
I hated the way it made my hair feel. I am not one who has even gotten along well with shampoo/conditioners in one. I had to use a deep conditioner afterward. I recommend you buy something good like Pantene Restoratives to use after using the tube that came with the kit; otherwise be prepared to face really dry hair.
Results:
I knew I wouldn’t see results till my hair was dry and fully straightened to perfection. So that’s what I did. I let my hair slowly air dry, and then I used my flat iron.
As I began to straighten each section of my hair, I got angrier and angrier, because the supposed bold fuchsia color was barely showing. It dyed some areas, but the bold ‘look at me’ purple color, like the chick on the box had, surely was not showing in my hair. I was expecting color that popped, and I got a bit of a mahogany coloring to my hair, which was not what I was looking for.
I was disappointed because the LOreal Paris Colour Rays promised excellent results even on the darkest of strands. Obviously the chick on the box dyed her hair blond first, and then added the fuchsia coloring to it.
Overall:
L’Oreal Paris Colour Rays will work wonders on blonds, however expect something totally off and different on those with dark hair.
