Letter of the Day Activities for the Letter B

Bean Bag Toss, Letter of the Day, Toilet Paper Tubes

These educational activities are perfect for preschool, kindergarten, and homeschool. See also the letter A activities.

Arts and Crafts

Give each child two toilet paper tubes to make a set of play binoculars. Let them decorate the tubes with construction paper, stickers, and crayons or markers. Tape the tubes together and then tape a string to each end so the binoculars can hang around their neck. Later they can wear them outside to go on a B scavenger hunt to search for butterflies, bugs, bees, boxes, bars (on the jungle gym), and other B words.

Print up a large block letter B on white paper for each child and glue the picture onto black, brown, or blue construction paper. Have bowls of dried beans, birdseed, and/or buttons out on the table along with glue. Let each child fill in their B with some of the beans or other materials.

Songs and Rhymes

All children love the song Bringing Home a Baby Bumblebee, especially the dramatic finish when they get stung by the bee.

I’m bringing home a baby bumblebee (Clasp hands together as if holding a bee inside)

Won’t my mommy be so proud of me (Continue clasping hands together)

Buzz buzz buzz buzz buzz buzz buzz buzz (Buzz to the tune of the first line)

Ouch! It stung me! (Throw open hands as if you were just stung)

Other songs and rhymes that work well with B day include: Baa, Baa Black Sheep, Pat-A-Cake, and Take me out to the Ballgame.

Math and Science

Practice counting with beans, blocks, or buttons. Put out bowls or plates with the numbers one through ten printed on them. Have each child count out the designated number of beans, blocks, or buttons for each bowl.

Have a block building contest. In small groups, have children alternate placing blocks on a tower while counting out each block. Keep building until the tower topples. Experiment with different sizes and shapes of blocks. Ask each child to predict if they think their group can build a bigger tower with square blocks or rectangle blocks or cylindrical shaped blocks?

Snack Time

Bananas, bagels, berries, beans, bacon, broccoli, and biscuits with butter are great B snacks. Spread out a blanket on the ground and have a bountiful B feast.

P. E./Outside Fun

Get every ball in the school and a large, clean trashcan and have a basketball shooting contest. You can also play a bean bag toss game. Another option is to blow up a couple of balloons and see how long the children can keep the balloons from touching the ground. Start with one balloon and then keep adding another each additional round to increase the challenge.
