Learn to Knit Scarves

Learn to Knit

I love to create with my hands, and while knitting is not on the top of my list, it is something that I dabble in from time to time. As a result, I don’t like to pay for my knitting patterns and so I’ve scrounged up a list of sites that offer free or very low cost knitting patterns. Scarves’ are always the easiest project, so it’s no surprise that there are a multitude of sites offering these patterns. Whether the patterns are from big names like Better Homes & Gardens, or from the little old lady who lives down the road, all of them are great ways to stretch your knitting muscles.

Knitting Pattern Central is our first stop, with a huge selection of scarf patterns from all around the internet. I’m not all together sure if all of the links still work, but with in excess of 300 patterns, there should be something here for just about any knitter. Some of their links are in PDF format for ease in downloading and printing while others require a registration. Both of these types of links are marked as such.

Next stop is Knitting on the Net. This site offers 32 different patterns and the option to create your own pattern. Many of these patterns are easy enough for a beginning knitter to do, and some take very little yarn to make. Whether you are looking for a knitted scarf that will keep you warm when the snow flies, or a knitted scarf to add a little punch to your outfit, you can find them all here. Some of these patterns are included in Knitting Pattern Centrals list, but not all of them.

About.com has 30 different knit scarf patterns in their knitting section. Best I can tell, none of these patterns are included in the knitting pattern central list, and with tabs on top to direct a beginning knitter to helpful how to’s, About.com is a wealth of information.

Knitting help.com offers an array of knitted scarf patterns for the beginning knitter as well as the advanced knitter. Large brightly colored photographs give you much more than just a cursory glance at what it is you are trying to knit.

Last on the list of lesser known sites is Straw.com, offering 171different patterns a few of which are crocheted and several added within the last couple of months.

I would be remiss in this article to miss mentioning some of the big name sites out there that also offer free knitted scarf patterns. Besides Better Homes & Gardens, TLC has several free patterns, as does Lion Brand Yarn and Coats & Clarke.

One other site worthy of mention is The Daily Knitter. With 150 patterns at last count, and exclusive patterns as well, The Daily Knitter not only has lots of patterns to look at, they have a great forum, offer several reviews of published pattern books, a comprehensive list of yarn companies and a directory of some off the beaten path yarn and pattern resources.
