She assures us we can have the doe-eyes we dream of without the hassle that can come along with choosing the wrong lashtician. Christine gives us the inside information that will save the first-timers venturing into the lash extension world time, money and gasp- their lashes! Yes, the wrong lash treatment can compromise, damage and even destroy natural lashes.

What are lash extensions? How do they differ from the lashes you can buy at beauty supply stores?

“Extensions are attached individually to your natural lashes while strip lashes are attached to each other as one unit, and then placed at the base of your natural set. It’s much more obvious when someone is wearing strip lashes because each lash appears identical and stiff, which looks unnatural. With the individual placement of extensions, the lashes can be moved and brushed (you can even swim in them!)”

What are the lash extensions made of? Are there different types?

“Eyelash extensions can be made of either a synthetic material, or mink (don’t worry- these cute little creatures are gently brushed for their locks-absolutely cruelty-free!) Both are hypoallergenic and great for a natural look. Synthetic lashes are heavier (although they come in thin sizes as well), while the mink lashes are much more flexible and feel very natural.”

What is the most important thing to consider when getting lash extensions?

“When getting eyelash extensions, it is of utmost importance that your lashtician adhere one extension to one natural lash. A lot of professionals say they apply them individually, when in reality they are attaching 1 false lash to every 3-5 of your own. Not only does this leave you looking like you have less lashes then you started with, but it can also cause irritation, which may lead to infection. If you feel any agitation (i.e. itchiness, swelling of the eye, more lash loss than normal), then the procedure is not being done properly.”

How long do lash extensions last?

“Eyelash extensions can last from 3-6 weeks depending on your Natural Lash Cycle,
and how well you take care of them (especially during the first 48 hours). Basically, your natural eyelashes are always in one of three stages of your Natural Cycle: Anagen (growth), Catagen (transition), and Telogen (resting). During the Anagen Phase your lashes are actively growing to a specific length. This phase can last anywhere from 30 to 45 days. Next is the Catagen Phase, when your eyelashes stop growing and your hair follicle shrinks. This lasts from two to three weeks. The Telogen phase is the final phase of the cycle and can last more than 100 days.
This is when your lashes “rest”; eventually falling out, and thus beginning the cycle again. Your eyelashes can be in any one of these phases at any given time, which is why some days you may lose more lashes than others.”

What are some additional tips and things to consider when getting lash extensions?

“Start with a full set and then get fills as needed. Although it is more expensive for a full set
up front, you end up saving money from needing touch-ups much less often, as it will be less noticeable when they begin to fall out. Know your body. If your skin tends to be oily, then you should request a higher bonding glue. If you have sensitive skin, request an allergy test. (This can be done with a dab of glue on the inside of your wrist prior to the procedure.) As a general rule, if you are Asian, then your lashes tend to be thinner, so mink lashes are recommended, sizes 8-10; If you are using a natural lash enhancing serum and your lashes are longer, you may use longer extensions. Don’t hesitate to check if your lashtician is certified. The area near your eye is extremely sensitive; it’s perfectly fine to be certain that you are placing your peepers in the care of a professional! Be sure that your lashtician is using a pharmaceutical grade glue. In general, companies like Novalash and Xtremelash are safe adhesives.
·Aftercare is imperative. Do not get your lashes wet for the first 48 hours. It is also wise to start using a non-oil-based makeup remover. The oil can break down the glue and cause the lashes to fall out sooner. ”
