The thing about clay pots is that they have so many different uses. Sure, people put plants and floweres in them, but they also use them for lots of other things. A clay pot can be a gift basket, a holder for utensils in the kitchen, or you can even paint a smile face on it and use it as a pencil holder for your desk.
It’s easy to make various Characters from a clay pot because, when turned upside-down, the pot resembles a body. Maybe not a body shape any of us would want, but for something like a miniature angel, the clay pot works great. With the pots available in many different sizes you can easily make a small angel or a much larger one.
Clean the terra cotta pot well and make sure it’s thoroughly dry. Paint it white. It might take more than one coat to get the coverage you want. Allow the paint to dry completely between coats.
Select a wooden ball as the head for the angel. A bead with two holes in it isn’t ideal since one hole will show at the top of the angel’s head. However, if you add hair to the angel later, you can position the bead so that the holes are to the side, then strategically position the hair over the holes. Paint the ball or bead any skin color or leave it as-is.
Cut a circle of white lace or use a white doily to make the angel’s gown. A lace doily looks beautiful but you can also use a paper doily. It has a lacy look but is much less expensive (although neither are costly). No matter what type of doily you use, cut it, if needed, to a length so that it just touches the table below the pot. Glue on narrow lace or other material to cover the cut edges. You can add glitter accents to any type of doily or lace by using paint markers, fabric paint or a similar choice. This is optional.
If you’re using a cloth doily, drape it over the upside-down pot. If you’re using paper, do the same, but gently crinkle it around the top of the pot to shape it. Foil gift wrap is another way you can make a lovely gown. After gluing on the doily, then the head, attach a piece of narrow lace or ribbon around the neck to conceal and to add a frilly accent.
Paint a simple face on the wooden bead. A small, red or pink circle for a mouth, and two black marker lines, shaped like “u’s” for the eyes, makes a nice face for the angel. Apply a little blush to the cheeks, if you want, for a soft glow.
Glue on yarn, string, doll hair or even cotton to cover the top of the head. If the angel will have really long hair you might find it easier to attach her wings before gluing on the hair. Shape a circle from a gold or silver pipe cleaner and glue it to the top of the head to create a halo.
To make the wings, cut a piece of wired ribbon, then fold the ends to the center. Squeeze the center together to form a bow shape then glue the crinkled area to the backside of the angel. She’s finished and she’s gorgeous!
