LA CHOY Soy Sauce

Oriental Food, Sea Urchin, Soy Sauce

LA CHOY all-purpose soy sauce according to a date printed on the label of the bottle is a product that was introduced in the year 1922 and was… “Inspired by traditional Asian cuisine.”

Soy sauce is used by many millions of people every day. It is considered a staple flavoring when teamed with Asian/oriental food. Many savory dishes would not taste the same without it. Chances are great that the reader of these words has a bottle of soy sauce sitting in the kitchen right at this moment. This sauce is used in the actual cooking of food and as a condiment to enhance familiar traditional tastes and flavors much like mustard on a hot dog, catsup(that’s the way I spell it!) on french fries, syrup on pancakes. And though it is delicious, low on fat, love by so many, it has one big flaw.

The sodium content of soy sauce is huge! If you think condensed soup is chipped directly off a salt lick and into the can soy sauce is right there with it sister! More on this later.

The bottle we bought was the 10 ounce offering. The purchase price for this brand name sauce was a reasonable $2.74 at our local Albertson’s . We noticed that there were many other brands to choose from as well as differing sizes of bottles. We decided to stick with a brand we were familiar with and a bottle size that was not microscopic no one which required a 1 ton flatbed truck to haul into our kitchen.

We tried it first on beef-broccoli stir-fry. In my opinion this is the dish that was made for the use of soy sauce. And it did not disappoint. My wife made her excellent stir-fry recipe and my eldest daughter contributed her locally renowned fried rice for this meal. The results were wonderful. It seems completely true that it just would not have tasted the same without soy sauce. And the LA CHOY brand tasted just perfect.

Ingredients are; water, salt, hydrolyzed soy protein, corn syrup, caramel color, and potassium sorbate. And according to the nutrition content breakdown on the label each serving contains 0 fat, 10 calories in one tablespoon, and 0 carbohydrates. Sounds good until you come to the sodium content. Amazingly there are 1160 mg of sodium or in other words this sauce is 48% sodium. Although regular users of soy sauce realize this it is reasonable to compare this to worchestire sauce which contains less than 10% of this sodium level.

Well we discussed the matter, we truly did, and decided we would continue using LA CHOY soy sauce. To be quite honest this sauce greatly enhanced our dining experiences, is a great buy of a national brand, and within our family does not pose much of a health hazard as we use soy sauce only occasionally. Not like my great uncle Cesar! who used so much he turned into a sea urchin!

Made you smile.
