Kids Crafts: A Harry Potter Spell Book from Recycled Materials

Book Binding

A Harry Potter spell book is the type of kids craft that never gets old. Learning how to make a spell book from recycled materials can spark an interest in other paper arts, book binding, book arts, and the environment.

The Harry Potter Spell Book is also a kids craft that can be made by anyone. What is important is to collect the recycled materials beforehand, especially when a group of crafting kids will be making the Harry Potter spell books.

The size of the Harry Potter spell book will be determined by the recycled materials available. Even when multiple children are making a Harry Potter spell book, or when a child would like to make more than one, the basic size of this kids craft can vary. Some kids will like a smaller, hand-held book, others may like to craft a larger spell book.

Craft the Front and Back Spell Book Covers From Recycled Cardboard

Collect the flat portions of cardboard boxes from cereal boxes and cracker boxes to make the covers for this kids craft. Cut the front and the back off of the box, and store the recycled cardboard in pairs, by paper clipping them together. Each piece will be the front cover or back cover of the book, and by paper clipping them together, kids will find a matching pair at craft time.

When preparing the recycled cardboard, make three to five small holes down the left-hand side of each piece, so it looks like binder paper. An adult can make these holes with paper punch, or even the tip of a pen. Once the holes are made to one piece of cardboard, line it on top of the second piece and make holes in that one as well.

Tip: make sure the holes are not too close to the edge of the cardboard, to prevent this kids craft from tearing.

Also make a hole on the right hand side of the recycled cardboard, in the center on the right.

Add Spell Book Paper From Recycled Cardboard

You can make any regular paper look like old, antiqued paper quite easily. Make your own antiqued paper or use off-white construction paper as the pages of the book. Another option is to use black paper.

Fold 5 to 10 sheets of paper in half. Keep the folded sides together.

Take the bottom of the book and place it on a flat surface. Next, neatly stack up the paper. Make sure that all of the open sides of the paper are on the right hand side. Finish with the top cover of the book.

Construct the Harry Potter Spell Book From Your Recycled Materials

Putting the Harry Potter spell book together can be done with a couple of different materials. The best way to construct the book is to string it together. Different recycled materials may be used to string the book together, including yarn, twine or ribbon.

Or purchase black leather cord from the local craft store. The string should be a minimum of 40 inches long.

Next, stick the tool you used to make the holes in the cardboard through the cardboard hole and then pierce the paper, until the tool comes out through the hole on the bottom piece of cardboard. Do this for all of the holes in the Harry Potter spell book.

There are many different ways to string the recycled spell book together in this kids craft project. Kids usually find their own creative ways. Just be sure that each hole is threaded, and that after the book is “sewn” together, there is a strong knot tied in the back.

Options for stringing the book made in this kids craft project together: cut the length of the string and make three separate bindings.
Another option: thread the string through the holes, starting in the center, and then up and down; also string around the spine for security.

The final step in constructing this kids craft is to string the ribbon through the back cover of the book, tying a knot in the back of the Harry Potter spell book. Do the same for the front cover, with the knot on the inside cover. Kids can use the ribbon to tie a bow toe secure the book for privacy.

Finally, kids can decorate this recycled kids craft however they’d like.

Now they have their own Harry Potter spell book to write in.
