Kid’s Craft – Make Puff Paint at Home for Three Dimensional Art

Choosing Paint Colors

Painting with normal paint can be fun, but the resulting pictures lack depth. Puff paint, or three dimensional paint, is sold at craft stores, but can get expensive for a parent of a very artistic child. You can make large quantities of puff paint at home with simple ingredients.

Puff Paint Kid’s Craft – Materials Needed

The puff paint is simple to make. For each color of paint, you will need about a half cup of flour, a half cup of salt, about one cup water, and four teaspoons of tempera or poster paint. Use a mixing bowl to mix the ingredients in. To use the puff paint easily, a plastic squeeze bottle is ideal. Washed out honey bottles work well. You might also need a funnel to fill the bottle, paint brushes, and paper.

Combine the flour, salt, tempera paint, and half the water in your mixing bowl. Mix this well. Keep adding more water until the paint can be poured smoothly. It should not be runny or it will not hold its shape when you attempt to paint with it.

Use the funnel to pour each color of paint into a seperate squeeze bottle. It is a good idea to put a label or piece of masking tape on each bottle with the color of paint you put inside.

Puff Paint Kids’ Craft – Creating Three Dimensional Art

Once you have created the puff paint, it is time to start painting. Use the squeeze bottles to paint pictures with the puff paint. Be sure not to squeeze too hard, or you will end up with a large lump and no picture. You can also use a paintbrush to create images and patterns. However, you must be sure not to put too thin a layer of paint on the paper. This paint does not puff as it dries. It is three dimensional because of the flour and salt within it.

After you have completed your puff paint three dimensional picture, it must dry for several hours. This paint takes a while to dry because it is so thick. When it is dry, however, you will have a wonderful piece of three dimensional art.

For children and parents who are bored with basic paints, crayons, or markers, making this puff paint three dimensional art is a great choice. Not only is it simple and inexpensive, the paint is non-toxic, cleans up easily, and creates wonderful artwork to display.
