Humane Society, Mutt, Pet Tricks, Shelter Animals

Pet lovers in Kent County, Maryland are so fortunate to have the Kent County, Maryland, Humane Society located in their area. The K.C. Humane Society is so much more than an adoption center for homeless pets. The Humane Society is very much part of Kent County’s Community.

Once a week Courtney Phelps, representing the Kent County Maryland Humane Society, is on WCTR, the local radio station, informing the community as to the pets that are up for adoption and the events scheduled for pets; at the shelter and around the county.

Both Courtney and Executive Director Ed Birkmire can be seen every week at the Chestertown Farmer’s Market on Saturday mornings walking dogs with a sign that reads” adopt me”, on the dogs back. Check out the pictures on Chestertown Farmer’s Market at Facebook. Most weeks the homeless dog strolling the market finds a new home.

Once a year the Kent County Humane Society, sponsors a huge community event called “Mutt Strutt”. Dog owners and dog lover assemble in the center of Chestertown, in Fountain Park, to parade through the town showing off their pets. In 2009, Mutt Strutt was combined with Washington College’s Center for Environmental Studies and the Town of Chestertown Earth Day Celebration to become an even bigger and better event.

The event takes place every April, and features the pets, the environment and lots of fun. Besides the Mutt Strutt, there is live music; lots of foods, free give a way’s, contest for the dogs, including pet tricks and limbo and more. To adopt an animal from the shelter, one must come into the shelter located at 10720 Augustine Herman Highway, Chestertown, MD and fill out an application. The shelter seeks to provide permanent placements to responsible loving homes. To accomplish this goal each applicant goes through a screening process to properly math the right pet with the right home.

Volunteers are always welcome at the shelter. To volunteer call them at 410-778-3648.
