Kannapolis, North Carolina – More Than Just Home to NASCAR’s Dale Earnhardt

Kannapolis North Carolina is located about 30 miles north of Charlotte North Carolina. It has allot of the old time feel to this town. While the town used to be a booming town with Fieldcrest Cannon mills making sheets and towels, that has since closed down and it has been kind of quiet for a few years. But soon that will be changing with the completion of the North Carolina Research Campus that is being build at the location of the old cannon Mills site.

Cannon Village is a shopping district of older stores and is located in the heart of Kannapolis. It has brick streets that is lined with many outlet, gift stores and restaurants. It’s about a 4 block area that has trees, and is a nice place to visit for a day. In the heart of the Cannon Village area is a bronze statue of a hometown hero, the 7 time NASCAR Champ, Dale Earnhardt that is in a small park.

The Dale Earnhardt memorial is a statue that weighs 900 pounds and stands almost 9 feet tall. You can easily get to the statue off of Interstate 85. Amtrak train also stops in Kannapolis. There are many things about the memorial that are interesting. For starters there are seven steps to get to the statue which represent the seven championship victories that Earnhardt won during his career. The base of the statues is also divided into seven sections. There is an oval shape walkway around the memorial, shaped like an oval track of the race track. The Dale statue also faces the place that he called home.

Cannon Village is relaxing place that offers a little bit of everything. The Textile museum relives the history of the workers that worked many hours at Cannon Mills factories. Cannon Mills was once the largest producer of textiles for the home. The museum has antique equipment that you can see, as well as a gift shop. Cannon Village is a great place to visit around the Holidays, when everything is decorated and the quaint feeling of long ago is revived,. The tree lined streets are in full bloom in the spring, bringing the village to life.

The Kannapolis Intimidation is the Class A baseball team for the area. You can sit and watch the games on a nice summer night and have a great time with your family.

Kannapolis has many interesting activities to do, it is also convenient to Charlotte, Lowes Motor Speedway, Historic Salisbury, Concord Mills Mall, and many other places that also holds allot of North Carolina history and sporting and cultural events..
