July 19th is a special holiday. In fact, every day’s a holiday for someone and for some reason.

Although we may not know the origins of many of these holidays, avid celebrants will participate eagerly in marking July 19th as a most special day for so many different reasons.

Flitch Day

July 19th is Flitch Day, an annual occasion for honoring successful marriages, particularly for newlyweds.

Originating in 15th Century England, Flitch Day traditions recognized couples who had lived in marital bliss for the past 12 months. Each pair who was deemed worthy received a flitch, or a large slab of bacon.

Old friends may be invaluable, but new friends are a welcome bonus as well. July 19th celebrates novel acquaintances. It’s New Friends Day.

Notable Anniversaries on July 19th:

On July 19, 1909, Cleveland Naps shortstop Neal Ball executed the first Major League Baseball triple play in a game against the Boston Red Sox. Neal Ball caught a line drive, right off the bat, touching second base before tagging the runner out.

The New York City subway offered its first air-conditioned car on July 19, 1967.
