Island Bedroom Decorating Ideas

Bedroom Decorating, Bedroom Decorating Ideas

When I close my eyes and think of island bedroom decorating ideas, I see a fresh white canopy bed and a wicker fan turning on the ceiling. There are wicker side tables there and wicker lamps. On the caramel wall behind the bed a canvas of sand hangs, and on the lampshades glass beads glitter. I’ve used these ideas in my guest bedroom, and here are the steps I followed.

Sheets, pillows, comfort

The bed in your island decor is a haven from the blistering sun outside. The sheets, pillow cases, duvet, must all be cool and white. So never use flannel or wool. Instead a polyester-cotton mix is ideal, though silk sheets, especially if the room is cool, will create a stunning display.

Exotic bed canopy

Island bedroom decorating must encompass some form of canopy. If you have one, use white fabric to echo the freshness of the bed. Without a wood frame, hang large swag hooks from the ceiling over the corners of the bed and tie a silk ribbon between them to form a line. Then hang sheets down with clip-on curtain rings and tie the canopy in four, corner bundles.

Silk bed decor

Against the fresh white of the bed, place a silk bed runner in crimson, purples or greens. Repeat these colors in two or three decorative pillows. The sparse splashes of color on the bed will add exotic sophistication to your island bedroom decorating.

Island side tables

Use ordinary furniture if you’re aiming at more sophisticated decor. For a stress on the island beach element in the design stuff large wicker baskets with rags or cardboard until they grow stiff, then turn them upside down and use them as bedside tables.

Bedside lamps

Glue a small wicker basket around a simple lamp base to give it an island bedroom feel. Use silk ribbons to trim the top and bottom. On white lamp shades glue a tassel fringe of beads that will glitter in the light.

Bedside rugs

For a sophisticated look, select white sheep skin rugs for either side of the bed. For a cheaper alternative, look for wicker or bamboo rugs, which you can decorate with stamps of tree leaves, found in craft stores.

Bedside chairs

Before the bed position two rocking chairs. Paint then sand them, as if the sun and wind had worn them with the years. For a true island feel, look for chairs with wicker seats.

Island wall decor

You’ll find model sail ships in home decorating stores. Mount them on the wall above the bed using shelf brackets or mantle shelves. Or, if you like modern art, buy a mounted canvas at a craft store, spread glue on it and then sprinkle multi-colored sand over the fresh glue to form sand patterns.

Wall color

Don’t paint your walls blue. For island bedroom decorating, select caramel for the accent wall behind the bed and sand color for the rest of the walls.

Hide clutter

Any clutter you may wish to hide, from shoes to television remotes, can be stored in wicker baskets. Buy your baskets as a set to create harmony in your island decor, and be sure all the baskets are lidded.

Overhead fan

If you have ceiling wiring then install a wicker fan overhead to complete the ambiance of your island bedroom. However, be sure to stay clear of the canopy.
